Article Synopsis
  • Naphthenic acids (NAs) are harmful by-products from petrochemical processes, notably in oil sands mining, and their toxicity is not fully understood, especially regarding aquatic invertebrates.
  • There is substantial evidence that NAs have toxic effects on aquatic organisms, but this study specifically investigates their impact on the embryonic development of the freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis.
  • The research reveals concentration-dependent teratogenic effects of NAs, identifying similar toxic thresholds, and highlights differences in how various NAs affect embryonic development, suggesting that molecular structure plays a significant role in toxicity.

Surface bitumen extraction from the Alberta's oil sands region generates large settling basins known as tailings ponds. The oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) stored in these ponds contain solid and residual bitumen-associated compounds including naphthenic acids (NAs) that can potentially be biodedgraded by indigenous tailings microorganisms. While the biodegradation of some NAs is known to occur under aerobic conditions, little is understood about anaerobic NA biodegradation even though tailings ponds are mainly anoxic.
