Introduction: Multiple studies have demonstrated improved perinatal outcomes for group prenatal care (GPC) when compared to traditional prenatal care. Benefits of GPC include lower rates of prematurity and low birth weight, fewer cesarean deliveries, improved breastfeeding outcomes and improved maternal satisfaction with care. However, the outpatient financial costs of running a GPC program are not well established.

The dental program at the University of Rochester clinic in Honduras, as well as other projects, have demonstrated that the ability to deliver quality care can be enhanced by expanded use of medical personnel, other than dentists, and even by civic action. While there is no substitute for the trained dentist, perhaps techniques learned in these projects can alleviate some of the predicaments until such a dentist is accessible.
