Introduction: Although the effectiveness of tobacco quitline services for people who smoke cigarettes is well established, less is known about other forms of tobacco. This study aimed to compare quit rates and factors contributing to tobacco abstinence in men reporting dual use (smokeless tobacco and one additional combustible tobacco product), smokeless tobacco use only, and cigarette use only.

Methods: Self-reported 30-day point-prevalence tobacco abstinence at the 7-month follow-up was calculated in males who registered with the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline and completed a 7-month follow-up survey (N=3,721) (July 2015-November 2021).

Context: Diabetes and cigarette smoking are major causes of morbidity and mortality. Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who smoke are at an increased risk of smoking- and diabetes-related morbidity and mortality.

Objective: We examined utilization patterns, satisfaction, and tobacco cessation outcomes among persons with T2D to determine whether the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline is an equally effective intervention for tobacco users with T2D compared with those without diabetes.

This study aimed to assess how the relationship between youth assets and future no-tobacco use among youth might differ according to race/ethnicity, neighborhood factors and socio-economic status. Five waves of annual data were collected from 1111 youth/parent pairs living in Oklahoma, USA who were randomly selected to participate in the Youth Asset Study (YAS). A marginal logistic regression model using all five waves of no-tobacco use, demographics, and their interaction was used to compare the change in tobacco use over time.

Background: Epilepsy and neurocysticercosis (NCC) prevalence estimates in sub-Saharan Africa are still scarce but show important variation due to the population studied and different screening and diagnosis strategies used. The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence of epileptic seizures and epilepsy in the sampled population, and the proportion of NCC among people with epilepsy (PWE) in a large cross-sectional study in a rural district of southern Malawi.

Methods: We conducted a community-based door-to-door screening study for epileptic seizures in Balaka, Malawi between October and December 2012.

It is estimated that the prevalence of smoking among adults with MHDs ranges between 40-60%, as compared to about 17% among those without an MHD. In addition, smokers with MHDs smoke more cigarettes, are more nicotine dependent, and experience more difficulty quitting, compared to other smokers. The uniquely high smoking prevalence among the MHD population is a serious public health concern; unfortunately, a majority of individuals experiencing difficulty receive no treatment.

Importance: In 2019, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection contributed to more deaths in the US than 60 other notifiable infectious diseases combined. The incidence of and mortality associated with HCV infection are highest among American Indian and Alaska Native individuals.

Objective: To evaluate the association of the Cherokee Nation (CN) HCV elimination program with each element of the cascade of care: HCV screening, linkage to care, treatment, and cure.

Purpose: Although quitlines reach 1% to 2% of tobacco users annually, additional efforts are needed to increase their impact. We hypothesized that offering less intensive services would increase the rate of re-enrollment in any service, as well as re-enrollment in more intensive services. This study describes the enrollment patterns and identifies re-enrollment predictors for Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline (OTH) participants.

Background: Modern technology (ie, websites and social media) has significantly changed social mores in health information access and delivery. Although mass media campaigns for health intervention have proven effective and cost-effective in changing health behavior at a population scale, this is best studied in traditional media sources (ie, radio and television). Digital health interventions are options that use short message service/text messaging, social media, and internet technology.

Objectives: This study's purpose was to determine if youth race/ethnicity, youth age and sex, parent income and education, household wealth, family poverty, and family structure were prospectively associated with youth assets in a community-based sample of racially/ethnically and economically-diverse youth and their parents.

Methods: Five waves of data were collected annually (2003 to 2008) from youth (N = 1111; Mean age = 14.4 years, SD = 1.

Introduction: To increase the use of quitlines for treating tobacco use and dependence, quitline referral interventions are recommended for healthcare systems and providers. Research is limited as to whether fax-referred smokers have quit outcomes similar to those of traditional self-callers to quitlines.

Methods: Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline registration data from March 2013 to October 2014 and 7-month follow-up data were used to compare hospital- and clinic-based fax-referred registrants (n=537) to self-callers (n=2,577).

Objectives: We hypothesized that showing native Spanish speaking parents, a Spanish video explaining the risks and benefits of anesthesia within two weeks prior to surgery would reduce parental anxiety.

Methods: Subjects were randomly assigned to video-group or non-video-group. Both groups completed PPUS, STAIT and APAIS tests before and after viewing the videos.

Objective: Pretreatment with clopidogrel before percutaneous coronary intervention improves cardiovascular outcomes. However, some patients require elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery instead, possibly increasing bleeding complications. We sought to assess the hemorrhagic complications and the length of hospital stay of stable patients receiving clopidogrel pretreatment that are referred for CABG.
