Purpose: To evaluate the fracture resistance of zirconia overlays, considering various preparation designs and the presence of endodontic access.
Materials And Methods: Ninety translucent zirconia (5Y-PSZ) overlay restorations were divided into six groups (n = 15/group) based on different preparation designs, with and without endodontic access: chamfer margin 4 mm above the gingival level without (group 1) and with endodontic access (group 2); margin 2 mm above the gingival level without (group 3) and with endodontic access (group 4); overlay with no chamfer margin without (group 5) and with endodontic access (group 6). Restorations were bonded to mandibular first molar resin dies, and the groups with endodontic access were sealed with flowable resin composite.
Objectives: To use a novel rib unfurling technology to investigate the locations of multiple rib fractures occurring from high-energy trauma to discern if there are reproducible rib fracture patterns.
Methods: Patients between the ages of 18 and 48 years presenting to a Level 1 academic trauma center with ≥2 rib fractures after a high-energy mechanism of injury between 2017 and 2019 were identified. Curved planar reformatting of CT scans was used to create two-dimensional unfurled rib images by flattening out the view of the ribs from a CT scan.

Cautery disbudding of goat kids causes thermal burns and tissue destruction, which results in acute and post-operative pain and negatively affects animal welfare. The objectives of this study were to evaluate acute cortisol concentrations and behavioral responses associated with (1) injecting a lidocaine ring block prior to cautery disbudding and comparing this to saline injections and (2) pain mitigation strategies (lidocaine ring block, topical eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream, oral meloxicam) on cautery disbudded dairy goat kids. Sixty doe kids were allocated to one of six treatments: (1) disbudding without pain relief (DB), (2) a ring block using 1% lidocaine (DBLA) 20 min before disbudding, (3) saline injection (DBSA) 20 min before disbudding, (4) oral meloxicam 60 min before disbudding (DBMEL), (5) EMLA cream rubbed into the buds 60 min before disbudding (DBEM) and (6) handled but not disbudded (HAND).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To determine the prevalence of postkeratoplasty fungal infection when corneal tissue from donors with a recent medical history of oral thrush or respiratory, urine, wound, sputum, bronchial, tracheal, or throat culture positive for fungus is identified before recovery and after decontamination of the corneal tissue with 5% povidone-iodine flush to the donors' eyes during recovery.
Methods: This is a prospective analysis of corneas from 42 donors with a documented medical history of fungus or positive fungal culture, which were recovered between January 2010 and November 2010. Standard aseptic swab of the donors' corneas before and after application of 5% povidone-iodine solution was performed.
Purpose: To evaluate the rate of rejection after Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) in patients with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (ED) and to analyze potential risk factors for rejection.
Methods: An observational retrospective chart review of 400 patients with Fuchs ED was performed. The primary outcome was the rate of endothelial graft rejection.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the marginal integrity of interim crowns made by CAD/CAM compared with that of conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) crowns.
Material And Methods: A dentoform mandibular left second premolar was prepared for a ceramic crown and scanned for the fabrication of 60 stereolithical resin dies, half of which were scanned to fabricate 15 Telio CAD-CEREC and 15 Paradigm MZ100-E4D-E4D crowns.
Purpose: To describe complications after use of mitomycin C (MMC) as a surgical adjuvant in pterygium surgery.
Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of patients presenting to a tertiary referral center over a 7-year period with a diagnosis of scleral stromalysis after previous pterygium removal.
Results: Sixteen eyes of 15 patients were identified with scleral stromalysis after pterygium surgery with the use of adjuvant MMC.

Methods: This was a prospective sampling assay. Participants held a sterile 30-gauge half-inch needle 25 cm from their mouth for 30 seconds under 2 conditions: (1) while speaking and (2) while breathing silently.
Purpose: To determine the cooling effect of generic insulated shipping containers in ambient and high-temperature environments.
Methods: Twenty-seven shipping containers were packed with wet ice according to industry standards. The ice in each container was weighed.
Purpose: To compare the effect of 1% versus 5% polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I) chemical preparation (prep) of the eye on the recovery of organisms from donor globes before in situ recovery of donor corneal tissue.
Methods: One hundred consecutive pairs of donor corneas (200 eyes) were randomized to receive either 1% or 5% PVP-I drops applied to the conjunctival cul-de-sac, which was left in place for 2 minutes. Limbal cultures were obtained before and after prepping of the eye.
