Long-term results of preperitoneal hernioplasty.

A long-term follow-up study (21-27 years) was performed on 134 patients with 142 inguinal or femoral hernias repaired with preperitoneal hernioplasty. Since their previous follow-up, 1/2-4 years postoperatively, there were nine more recurrences of hernia, viz. 1/12 in the group with direct-type, 8/116 in the indirect-type group, but 0/14 femoral hernias.

Blood chemistry and skeletal muscle metabolic responses during and after different speeds and durations of trotting.

Eight standardbred horses trotted on a treadmill for 55 mins at a sub-maximal speed of 5m/sec and subsequently performed an exercise test consisting of 2 min intervals at increasing speed. Heart (HR) and respiratory (Rf) rates and venous blood samples were obtained before, during and for 5 mins after exercise. Gluteus medius muscle biopsies and rectal temperatures were taken before and after exercise.

Muscular adaptation of horses during intensive training and detraining.

Five horses were studied during a five-week regime of controlled intensive daily training on a high-speed treadmill followed by five weeks of detraining. Muscle biopsies were taken weekly from both the right and left gluteus muscle and from the sternocephalicus muscle before, and at the end of, the training and detraining periods. Histochemical and biochemical analyses of the sternocephalicus muscle showed no metabolic adaptation with either training or detraining.

A novel assay for pancreatic cellular damage: III. Use of a pancreas-specific protein as a marker of pancreatic graft dysfunction in humans.

Pancreas-specific protein (PASP) is a recently isolated and partially characterized major protein in the human pancreas. It has not been described previously. Serum levels of PASP and amylase were analyzed in 21 patients subjected to combined renal and segmental pancreatic transplantation with both organs obtained from the same donor and in eight kidney transplant patients.

Vitamin E requirement of growing swine.

The vitamin E requirement of growing pigs was estimated on the basis of prevention of morphological signs of deficiency. Five groups of pigs were fed a barley-based diet low in vitamin E that contained 16 mg of DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate equivalents/kg and .1 ppm of Se for 4 wk (depletion I).

Silastic replacement of the trapezium for arthrosis--a twelve year follow-up study.

Thirty-three patients with 39 Swanson silastic trapezium implants have been studied. Three years after operation no dislocation or evidence of implant wear was found, but re-examination at an average of 12 years after operation revealed dislocations and implant wear in about half of the cases. Cyst formation in surrounding carpal bones was found in twenty cases.

Circulatory and muscle metabolic responses to draught work compared to increasing trotting velocities.

Circulatory and muscle metabolic responses were studied in 10 horses which all performed incremental draught work at a low trotting speed on a treadmill (D-test) and also exercise with gradually increasing velocities (S-test). Exercise was continued until the horses could no longer maintain the weights above the floor or maintain speed trotting without changing gait to a gallop. Muscle biopsies were taken from the gluteus and the semitendinosus muscles before, and immediately after, exercise.

Increased nonrenal clearance and increased diuretic efficiency of furosemide in cystic fibrosis.

The pharmacokinetics of furosemide and its diuretic effect were studied in six patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and in six age-matched healthy volunteers. Furosemide was given intravenously at a dose of approximately 0.5 mg/kg.

Persistent alanine aminotransferase elevation in healthy Swedish blood donors--mainly caused by obesity.

Five hundred consecutive healthy blood donors were tested for serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and 44 (8.8%) had increased levels. Intraindividual variability in the relative systemic availability of cyclosporin after oral dosing.

We have measured total and unbound plasma concentrations of cyclosporin A in seven healthy men after single oral doses (12 mg per kg body weight) on two occasions at least two weeks apart. There was an up to two-fold intraindividual and a more than three-fold interindividual variation in the AUCs of both total and unbound drug. The intraindividual variability in the AUC of cyclosporin is similar to that of many other drugs and needs to be taken into account in the planning of pharmacokinetic studies.

Hypophosphatemia induced by dietary aluminium hydroxide supplementation in pigs: effects on growth, blood variables, organ weights and renal morphology.

Twenty-four pigs, 13-14 weeks of age, were studied during an experimental period of 10 weeks. The pigs were randomly divided into 3 groups. Two groups were fed a commercial feed supplemented either with a suspension of aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)) or aluminium phosphate (A1PO).

HBsAg-positive Swedish blood donors: natural history and origin of infection.

99 HBsAg-positive blood donors (BDs) were discovered in Göteborg during 1970-84. Of the 82 patients where the outcome is known 46 had transient and 36 persistent antigenemia. Chronic hepatitis was found in 6 patients while 30 were asymptomatic carriers.

The safety of blood and blood products in Scandinavia today is high. An absolutely safe blood supply is, however, an unattainable goal. The dominating risk is transmission of non-A, non-B virus (NANBV).

Ciclosporin-associated hypertrichosis is not related to sex hormone levels following renal transplantation.

To study a possible relationship between ciclosporin-induced hypertrichosis and sex hormone pattern, the hair growth in different areas of the body was graded and hormone levels were assayed before and up to 6 months after kidney transplantation. Increased hair growth was observed in 100% (23/23) of the patients in skin areas connected with androgen action and in 78% of the patients in androgen-insensitive areas. After renal transplantation the pituitary, testicular and adrenal hormone levels normalized.

The role of cyclosporine dosage and plasma levels in efficacy and toxicity in bone marrow transplant recipients.

The efficacy and toxicity of cyclosporine (CsA) treatment for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was studied in 53 bone marrow transplant recipients. No correlation was found between acute or chronic GVHD and CsA dosage (daily or cumulative) or CsA plasma levels. Acute nephrotoxicity developed in 63% of the patients.
