Background: We evaluated the association between metabolic syndrome (obesity plus two metabolic risk factors) and breast cancer outcomes according to molecular subtype.
Methods: This population-based prospective cohort consisted of 3,267 women aged 20-69 diagnosed with a first primary invasive breast cancer from 2004-2015 in the Seattle-Puget Sound region. Breast cancer was categorized into three subtypes based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression: luminal (ER+), triple-negative (ER-/PR-/HER2-), and HER2-overexpressing (H2E) (ER-/HER2+).
Objectives: To identify global differences in the use of suppressive antimicrobial therapy (SAT) in the management of prosthetic joint infection (PJI).
Methods: An online survey was designed to investigate clinician's approach to SAT for PJI, including indications, preferred antimicrobial drugs, dosing, treatment duration and follow-up. The survey was distributed to members of four international (bone and joint) infection societies and study groups.
Background And Objectives: A key step in electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis is the detection of QRS complexes, particularly for arrhythmia detection. Telehealth ECGs present a new challenge for automated analysis as they are noisier than traditional clinical ECGs. The aim of this study was to identify the best-performing open-source QRS detector for use with telehealth ECGs.

Horses can also act as subclinical reservoir hosts of infection, which are characterized as asymptomatic carriers that persistently excrete leptospires and transmit disease. In this study, PCR and culture were used to assess urinary shedding of pathogenic from 37 asymptomatic mares.

In this study we prospectively evaluated the test-retest uptake variability of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (F-FDG) in a cohort of breast cancer patients with bone-dominant metastases to determine response criteria. The thresholds for 95% specificity of change versus no-change were then applied to a second cohort of breast cancer patients with bone-dominant metastases.

The development aimed at providing the basic characteristics of FD-MS in combination with instruments equipped with an atmospheric pressure (AP) interface. Hitherto, APFD has been demonstrated to yield both positive and negative even electron ions of highly polar or ionic compounds as well as to enable the generation of positive molecular ions, M, of polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Here, we investigated the impact of ZIKV infection on the functionality of iPSC-derived astrocytes. Besides, we extrapolated our findings to a Brazilian cohort of 136 CZS children and validated our results using a mouse model.

Spinal muscular atrophy linked to chromosome 5 (SMA-5q) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by mutations in the . SMA-5q is characterized by progressive degeneration of the spinal cord and bulbar motor neurons, causing severe motor and respiratory impairment with reduced survival, especially in its more severe clinical forms. In recent years, highly effective disease-modifying therapies have emerged, either acting by regulating the splicing of exon 7 of the gene or adding a copy of the gene through gene therapy, providing a drastic change in the natural history of the disease.

Microcephaly is characterized by an occipitofrontal circumference at least two standard deviations below the mean for age and sex. Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) are commonly associated with microcephaly, due to perturbations in brain development and functioning. Given the extensive genetic heterogeneity of microcephaly, managing patients is hindered by the broad spectrum of diagnostic possibilities that exist before conducting molecular testing.

FES has undergone extensive clinicopathologic validation for ER-positive breast cancer and in 2020 received FDA approval for clinical use as an adjunct to biopsy in patients with recurrent or metastatic ER-positive breast cancer. Clinical use of FES PET/CT is increasing but is not widespread in the United States.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe estrogen receptor (ER), a steroid hormone receptor important in female physiology, is a significant contributor to breast carcinogenesis and progression and, as such, is an important therapeutic target. Approximately 70% of breast cancers will express ER at presentation, and the determination of ER expression by tissue assay, usually by immunohistochemistry, is part of the standard of care for newly diagnosed breast cancer. ER expression is important in guiding the approach to treatment, especially with the increase in relevant systemic therapies.

Thus, the need to develop and demonstrate new sustainable solutions regarding both energy supply and consumption, but also energy system optimization, is obvious. This case study presents the nano-size off-grid energy system at the Meteoria visitor center in Ostrobothnia, Finland, and the real-time measuring techniques that have been installed to follow up the energy production and consumption.

Methods: This population-based prospective cohort consisted of 3,876 women ages 20 to 69 diagnosed with a first primary invasive breast cancer from 2004 to 2015 in the Seattle-Puget Sound region. Breast cancer was categorized into three subtypes based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 expressions: luminal (ER+), triple-negative (TN; ER-/PR-/HER2-), and HER2-overexpressing (H2E; ER-/HER2+).
Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease. We previously showed that homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) and the DNA damage immune response (DDIR) signature are prognostic in TNBC. We hypothesized that these biomarkers reflect related but not completely interdependent biological processes, that their combined use would be prognostic, and that simultaneous assessment of the immunologic microenvironment and susceptibility to DNA damaging therapies might be able to identify subgroups with distinct therapeutic vulnerabilities.

This study evaluated the change in incidence between 1992 and 2016 of secondary breast angiosarcoma (SBA) in patients with a history of breast cancer and the impact of management strategies for the original breast carcinoma on angiosarcoma treatment.
Methods: Breast cancer and angiosarcoma cases were abstracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result (SEER) database.
The development of artificial intelligence-based imaging techniques for prostate cancer (PCa) detection and diagnosis requires a reliable ground truth, which is generally based on histopathology from radical prostatectomy specimens. This study proposes a comprehensive protocol for the annotation of prostatectomy pathology slides. To evaluate the reliability of the protocol, interobserver variability was assessed between five pathologists, who annotated ten radical prostatectomy specimens consisting of 74 whole mount pathology slides.
