This study explores the question whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) can outperform human experts in animal pain recognition using sheep as a case study. It uses a dataset of N = 48 sheep undergoing surgery with video recordings taken before (no pain) and after (pain) surgery. Four veterinary experts used two types of pain scoring scales: the sheep facial expression scale (SFPES) and the Unesp-Botucatu composite behavioral scale (USAPS), which is the 'golden standard' in sheep pain assessment.

It is widely believed that axons in the central nervous system of adult mammals do not regrow following injury. This failure is thought, at least in part, to underlie the limited recovery of function following injury to the brain or spinal cord. Some studies of fixed tissue have suggested that, counter to dogma, norepinephrine (NE) axons regrow following brain injury.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a global epidemic. MASLD has a strong genetic component, and a common missense variant (rs2642438) in the mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component 1 (MARC1) gene confers protection against its onset and severity. However, there are contrasting results regarding the mechanisms entangling this protection.

Mammalian parenting is an unusually demanding commitment. How has the reward system been co-opted to ensure parental care? Previous work has implicated the lateral habenula (LHb), an epithalamic nucleus, as a potential intersection of parenting behavior and reward. Here, we examine the role of the LHb in the maternal behavior of naturally parturient primiparous mouse dams.

Skin thickness was found to be moderately heritable and genetically associated with lamb survival in a previous study on Romney sheep. The aims of this study were to estimate the heritabilities of skin thickness and skin temperature at around five and 11 months of age, and determine genetic and phenotypic correlations between them and with production traits such as fat depth, loin-eye muscle depth and width, live weights at weaning, scanning, and 12 months, and 12-month fleece weight, in FocusPrime (n=2,088), Texel (n=732), Romney (n=825) and Highlander (n=1,801) sheep breeds. Heritability estimates of skin thickness at 5-month old were moderate in FocusPrime (0.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is caused by metabolic triggers and genetic predisposition. Among the genetic MASLD risk variants identified today, the common PNPLA3 148M variant exerts the largest effect size of MASLD heritability. The PNPLA3 148M protein is causatively linked to the development of liver steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis in experimental studies and is therefore an appealing target for therapeutic approaches to treat this disease.

Brain-derived estrogen (17β-estradiol, E2) is a neuromodulator that plays important roles in neural plasticity and network excitability. Chronic inhibition of estrogen synthesis is used in adjuvant breast cancer therapy for estrogen receptor-positive tumors and may have been associated with cognitive and affective side effects. Here, we have developed a model of adjuvant therapy in female ovariectomized mice in which the E2 biosynthetic enzyme aromatase is inhibited by letrozole (1 mg/kg/day, i.

Article Synopsis
  • Task-free brain activity shows spontaneous fluctuations in functional states, indicating individual differences in brain connectivity and mental states, which may predict vulnerability to psychiatric disorders.
  • Research on 33 non-clinical individuals indicated that certain alpha brain wave states were linked to higher proneness to auditory hallucinations.
  • Specifically, individuals more prone to auditory hallucinations exhibited greater time in states characterized by activity in areas related to sensory and auditory processing, suggesting a relationship between alpha dynamics and auditory perceptual sensitivity.

47,XXX (Triple X syndrome) is a sex chromosome aneuploidy characterized by the presence of a supernumerary X chromosome in affected females, and has been associated with a variable cognitive, behavioral, and psychiatric phenotype. Alterations in brain gray matter structure and function have been reported, but less is known about white matter (WM) organization in 47,XXX. Therefore, we conducted 7 T diffusion tensor imaging and characterized fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity, axial diffusivity, and radial diffusivity of 22 adult women with 47,XXX and 22 age-matched typically developing females using tract-based spatial statistics.

During fMRI neurofeedback participants learn to self-regulate activity in relevant brain areas and networks based on ongoing feedback extracted from measured responses in those regions. This closed-loop approach has been successfully applied to reduce symptoms in mood disorders such as depression by showing participants a thermometer-like display indicating the strength of activity in emotion-related brain areas. The hitherto employed conventional neurofeedback is, however, 'blind' with respect to emotional content, i.

Article Synopsis
  • Vancomycin is an antibiotic used for serious Gram-positive infections in children, and its effectiveness depends on a specific dosing measurement known as the AUC/MIC ratio.
  • The study compares a new model-informed precision dosing (MIPD) method with standard care in 14 pediatric clinical settings to see if MIPD improves dosing accuracy and reduces potential kidney damage.
  • Key outcomes include the rate of patients achieving the target AUC/MIC within the first few days of treatment and monitoring the occurrence of acute kidney injury during this period.

Gastrointestinal microbes modulate peristalsis and stimulate the enteric nervous system (ENS), whose development, as in the central nervous system (CNS), continues into the murine postweaning period. Given that adult CNS function depends on stimuli received during critical periods of postnatal development, we hypothesized that adult ENS function, namely motility, depends on microbial stimuli during similar critical periods. We gave fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to germ-free mice at weaning or as adults and found that only the mice given FMT at weaning recovered normal transit, while those given FMT as adults showed limited improvements.

Stress-related disorders are among the biggest global health challenges. Despite significant progress in understanding their neurocognitive basis, the promise of applying insights from fundamental research to prevention and treatment remains largely unfulfilled. We argue that neurofeedback - a method for training voluntary control over brain activity - has the potential to fill this translational gap.

Introduction: β-Lactams are the most widely used antibiotics in children. Their optimal dosing is essential to maximize their efficacy, while minimizing the risk for toxicity and the further emergence of antimicrobial resistance. However, most β-lactams were developed and licensed long before regulatory changes mandated pharmacokinetic studies in children.

Advances in tagging technologies are expanding opportunities to estimate survival of fish and wildlife populations. Yet, capture and handling effects could impact survival outcomes and bias inference about natural mortality processes. We developed a multistage time-to-event model that can partition the survival process into sequential phases that reflect the tagged animal experience, including handling and release mortality, post-release recovery mortality, and subsequently, natural mortality.
