Background: Liver transplantation is often the ultimate option of therapy for chronically hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients. Prevention of reinfection is therapy intensive and cost-effective. Adoptive transfer of HBV-specific immunity with the liver from an immune living liver donor (LLD) could be a new approach to prevent reinfection.

This study examined the performance of a tuberculosis (TB)-specific enzyme-linked immunospot assay in 48 patients awaiting liver transplantation. They were tested with T-SPOT.TB, tuberculin skin test (TST), and lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) using tuberculin as a stimulus.

Effect of sublingual triazolam on the success of inferior alveolar nerve block in patients with irreversible pulpitis.

The purpose of this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was to determine the effect of the administration of sublingual triazolam on the success of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) block in patients experiencing irreversible pulpitis. Fifty-eight emergency patients diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis of a mandibular posterior tooth randomly received, in a double-blind manner, an identical sublingual tablet of either 0.25 mg of triazolam or a placebo 30 minutes before administration of a conventional IAN block.

The present study compared the performance of the hybrid capture method with that of linear array for the detection of high-risk HPV in 218 cervical samples. Donor cell reaction to OKT3 as predictor of chronic graft-vs-host disease in hematopoietic stem cell recipients.

Objective: In the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation setting, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration can reduce donor cell reactivity in vitro, but the clinical significance of this phenomenon was only sparsely defined.

Methods: We performed lymphocyte transformation tests in 28 related stem cell donors pre and 5 days post G-CSF treatment, respectively, and correlated proliferative responses of donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells with clinical parameters in the corresponding recipients.

Results: In vitro reactions towards 4 mitogens and 12 recall antigens at day 5 post G-CSF administration were predictive for the occurrence of chronic graft-vs-host disease (cGVHD).

Immune parameters in multiple myeloma patients: influence of treatment and correlation with opportunistic infections.

The present study evaluated cellular and humoral immune parameters in myeloma patients, focusing on the effect of treatment and the risk of opportunistic infections. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and serum levels of nonmyeloma immunoglobulins (Ig) were analysed in 480 blood samples from 77 myeloma patients. Untreated myeloma patients exhibited significantly reduced CD4+/45RO+, CD19+, CD3+/HLA-DR+, and natural killer (NK) cells, as well as nonmyeloma IgA, IgG and IgM.

Effect of dietary ractopamine on tenderness and postmortem protein degradation of pork muscle.

Twenty-four finishing pigs with a mean starting weight of 82kg were assigned to two dietary regimens: (1) a corn-soybean meal basal diet (control; n=12), and (2) the basal diet supplemented with 20ppm ractopamine HCl (RAC; n=12). Estimation of endogenous phosphorus loss in growing and finishing pigs fed semi-purified diets.

Thirty-six barrows were used in a series of 3 P-balance experiments in which growing and finishing pigs were fed highly digestible, semi-purified diets at or below the dietary available P requirement to estimate the effect of BW on endogenous P loss. Experiments 1, 2, and 3 were conducted with pigs averaging 27, 59, and 98 kg of BW, respectively. In each experiment, pigs were placed in metabolism crates and allotted by weight and litter to 3 dietary treatments.

A nanocompartment system (Synthosome) designed for biotechnological applications.

A nanocompartment system based on two deletion mutants of the large channel protein FhuA (FhuA Delta1-129; FhuA Delta1-160) and an ABA triblock copolymer (PMOXA-PDMS-PMOXA) has been developed for putative biotechnological applications. FhuA is ideally suited for applications in biotechnology due to its monomeric structure, large pore diameter (39-46 A elliptical cross-section) that ensures rapid compound flux, and solved crystallographic structure.
