Computational views of perception do not consider affect to be required to solve a perceptual task. Previous research provided evidence for an affective component in early perceptual processes, but it is unclear whether late perceptual processes yield concomitant affect. Three studies using three different tasks explored changes in affect related to late perceptual processes by exposing participants to a visual object and measuring activity in facial muscles (zygomaticus major and corrugator supercilii) using facial EMG as indicators for affect.

Image aesthetic pleasure (AP) is conjectured to be related to image visual complexity (VC). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether (a) two image attributes, AP and VC, are reflected in eye-movement parameters; and (b) subjective measures of AP and VC are related. Participants (N=26) explored car front images (M=50) while their eye movements were recorded.

The dramatic bleaching events on the coral reefs recently have enhanced the need for environmental monitoring. Remote sensing is an important constituent for monitoring of reefs, and an invaluable complement to field observations. This paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of present high resolution satellites for mapping and monitoring coral reefs.

CASI data has been collected from two lakes in Sweden. In this paper, some statistical properties of CASI spectral data have been discussed. Principal component analysis is used for assessing the dimensionality of the data and the principal components were used for making chlorophyll maps.

Hyperspectral data have been collected by the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) and multispectral data by the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument for the purpose of mapping lake water quality. Field campaigns have been performed on Lake Erken in Sweden during the summer of 1997. Water samples have been collected and analysed in laboratory.

The effect of all-trans-retinoic acid (RA) on cellular transformation and on tumorigenicity of retrovirally transformed cells was investigated. RA treatment of NRK and NIH/3T3 cells transformed by BALB/c murine sarcoma virus (MuSV), Kirsten murine sarcoma virus (K-MuSV), and simian sarcoma virus resulted in a significant reduction in anchorage-dependent growth of only K-MuSV-transformed NRK cells. A 62% reduction in cell number was observed at 10(-5) M RA.

Human melanoma tumor colonies and derived cell lines (81-46a) were exposed to Actinomycin D (Act D) in vitro in order to study subcellular sites of drug-cell interaction. Light microscopy of 13 day-old colonies previously treated for 24 hours with 0.01 microgram/ml, 0.

The binding of actinomycin D (actD) to fixed human metaphase chromosomes was studied by using autoradiography with [3H]actD and indirect immunofluorescence with a specific anti-actD antibody. At concentrations of 0.01 and 0.

Dietary restriction is a known means of prolonging the life span of animals. How diet can increase longevity at the molecular level is not yet known. As organisms age, there is a decrease in the ability ot synthesize RNA and a decrease in protein synthesis indicating that there is an overall loss in gene expression.

Experiments were performed to address the known relationship between diet and longevity. The acute response of rat liver nuclear RNA polymerases to inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide (10 mg/kg) was quantitated in rats of varying ages. Thirty minutes after cycloheximide administration, there was a "compensatory" 1.

An antibody specific for actinomycin D (Act D) has been developed and used in a rapid, sensitive radioimmunoassay for detection of this anticancer drug in serum. The 2-amino group of the heterocyclic chromophore of Act D was covalently coupled to available free carboxyl groups of bovine serum albumin with carbodiimide. The resulting complex was then used for the production of a specific antibody to Act D in two male New Zealand rabbits.

Individual rapid procedures for the enrichment of Escherichia coli DNA polymerase I and of bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase free of endonuclease activity are described using Blue dextran-Sepharose chromatography. The blue dye of Blue dextran-Sepharose selectively binds to the deoxynucleoside triphosphate substrate site of the E. coli but not the T4 enzyme indicating that the catalytic sites of these two enzymes which catalyze the same polymerization reaction in vitro are quite distinct.

Intraperitoneal administration of cycloheximide (100 mg/kg) to rats produces a time-dependent rise in nuclear RNA polymerase II activity which is maximum at 30 min. This same concentration of cycloheximide also reduces RNA polymerase I activity to 64% of control within this time period. When 10 mg/kg of cycloheximide was administered, there was a 2-fold increase in both RNA polymerases II and III activities within 30 min as assayed in isolated nuclei.

Rat liver nuclear protein kinase NI, which appears in the flowthrough of DEAE-Sephadex columns, has been purified approximately 15,000-fold from soluble nuclear protein with yields of up to 10%. The method of purification involved chromatography of the DEAE-flowthrough protein successively on phosvitin-Sepharose and casein-Sepharose followed by rechromatography on phosvitin-Sepharose. The purified enzyme has an s20,w and molecular weight of 3.

Rat liver nuclear protein kinase activity (NII), which is eluted from DEAE-Sephadex columns, has been purified approximately 1500-fold from solubilized nuclear protein. The method of purification involved chromatography of protein eluted from DEAE-Sephadex successively on phosvitin-Sepharose, mixed histone-Sepharose, and histone H2b-Sepharose followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200. Resulting preparations are homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

During the 10 years from 1965 through 1974, 86 patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas were diagnosed or referred for treatment at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center. The average age and survival in these patients is not significantly different from other published series. Only four patients had resectable tumors, and of these two survived over twelve months.
