[Soccer injuries. A prospective epidemiological and socioeconomic study].

In one year 715 soccer injuries were registered and treated in the casualty ward of Randers City Hospital. We conducted a prospective study of these patients, using a questionnaire in order to determine the most common locations, types, mechanisms and treatments of injury. Financial costs to society and the individual were also examined.

[Handball injuries. An epidemiological and socioeconomic study].

A total of 570 injuries in handball players were prospectively registered in a well-defined geographical area of 124,321 inhabitants. The incidence of handball injuries was 46/10,000 inhabitants/year and in females (61/10,000/year) double that for males (31/10,000/year). Sixty-two percent of the injuries were distortions and sprains and 12% were fractures.

The uptake of platelets, fibrinogen and leucocytes in ePTFE vascular grafts in relation to blood flow--an experimental study in sheep.

The uptake of platelets, fibrinogen and leucocytes in relation to blood flow was studied in ePTFE arterial grafts inserted in both common carotid arteries of 10 adult sheep. Autologous platelets labelled with In-111, autologous leucocytes labelled with Tc-99m and homologous fibrinogen labelled with I-125 were used. The leucocyte uptake was studied in five of the animals.

Does low-dose acetylsalicylic acid prevent stroke after carotid surgery? A double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial.

Background And Purpose: The aim of this randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to evaluate whether neurological deficits could be prevented with low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) as an adjunct to carotid endarterectomy.

Methods: A total of 232 patients were randomized to two groups, 75 mg/d ASA starting preoperatively and continued for 6 months (n = 117) or placebo (identical tablets) (n = 115). The patients were followed up regularly for 1 year.

In Pakistan there are a number of acute problems related to maternal and infant health in the perinatal period. There is also lack of reliable data needed for the formulation of action strategies. To provide a database 1490 women have been followed from the 5th month of pregnancy in four different areas at various levels of urbanization and socio-economic development.

The feeding practices of children (n = 1476) from birth to 24 months, as determined in a longitudinal study, in Lahore, Pakistan, are presented. Four socioeconomic groups at various levels of urbanization were included; a village, periurban slum, urban slum and an upper middle class. Initiation of breastfeeding was delayed in all the neonates.

The aim was to characterize the determinants of child health in a rapidly urbanizing community. The study was undertaken in two steps.

Mortality during the first two years of life among 1476 Pakistani infants born between September 1984 and March 1987 is described according to age, causes of death, area of living, season of the year and sex. The mortality rate (deaths under two years/1000 live births) projected over the whole population of Pakistan was 127 and under one year 114. During the first two years of life, the mortality rate was 133/1000 in the village, 159 in the periurban slum, 107 in the urban slum and 17 in the upper middle class group.

Can recurrent stenosis after carotid endarterectomy be prevented by low-dose acetylsalicylic acid? A double-blind, randomised and placebo-controlled study.

Recurrent stenosis (> 50%) after carotid endarterectomy is reported with a frequency ranging from 7-20%. 232 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were randomised to low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (ASA, 75 mg daily) or placebo (identical tablets). The treatment was started the day before surgery and continued for 6 months.

Antithrombotic properties of a truncated recombinant tissue factor pathway inhibitor in an experimental venous thrombosis model.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a truncated recombinant tissue factor pathway inhibitor (rTFPI1-161) had an antithrombotic effect comparable to low-molecular-weight (LMW) heparin. A randomized double-dummy study was conducted with 40 rabbits in 6 groups. An experimental thrombosis was induced in the jugular veins by a combination of destroyed endothelium and restricted blood flow.

Sauvè-Kapandji operation for disorders of the distal radioulnar joint.

A series of 13 patients is reported in which a Sauvè-Kapandji procedure consisting of arthrodesis of the articulation between the radius and ulna combined with resection of the collum ulnae was used to treat posttraumatic caput ulnae syndrome. Among the nine female and four male patients whose median age was 42 years (range: 23 to 77 years), nine sustained a distal fracture that had healed with shortening of the radius or with subluxation of the caput ulnae. Median postoperative observation time was 16 months (range: six to 27 months).

Blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery and carotid artery stump pressure during carotid endarterectomy.

Twenty-one patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy were investigated by simultaneous intra-operative measurements of carotid stump pressure (CSP) and transcranial Doppler (TCD) flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery. The relationship between the two methods was evaluated as well as the potential benefits of the intraoperative transcranial Doppler monitoring technique. Clamping of the carotid artery resulted in a significant decrease in TCD flow velocity in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery as well as in CSP.

Older type IV colles fractures treated with intramedullary insertion of a Rush pin.

Forty-four patients with 46 Older type IV Colles fractures, who had been treated with intramedullary insertion of a Rush pin were examined after a mean period of 16 months. At follow-up 28 (64%) of the patients had little or no pain, and four (9%) had pain almost all the time. Compared with the opposite side the median grip strength was 76%, flexion/extension was 81%, supination/pronation was 88%, and ulnar/radial movement was 73%.

Bilateral renal autotransplantation with direct pyelocystostomy in a patient with frequent disabling nephroureterolithiasis. Case report.

A case with disabling nephroureterolithiasis, initially most frequent from the right side, later also from the left kidney, is presented. Conservative treatment did not improve the condition and bilateral renal autotransplantation with pyelocystostomies was performed. Follow-up so far has been uneventful.

Time-related effects of heparin sulfate on regional and systemic anticoagulation.

Optimal timing of vascular clamping to anticoagulation during cardiovascular surgical procedures is poorly defined. This study uses a canine model to determine the effectiveness of three different methods of heparin administration. Heparin sulfate (150 IU/kg) was administered by: injection into the jugular vein 5 minutes before infrarenal aortic clamping (Group 1), injection into the terminal aorta immediately after infrarenal aortic clamping (Group 2), and injection into the jugular vein immediately after infrarenal aortic clamping (Group 3).

Low molecular weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis and epidural/spinal anaesthesia--is there a risk?

This article reviews the problem of bleeding in connection with epidural/spinal anaesthesia, with special emphasis on the use of low molecular weight heparins for thromboprophylaxis. There are methodological difficulties to studying the problem in a scientifically correct way because of the rarity of the complication. However, from the data in the literature there are no indications of an increased risk in using the combination of low molecular weight heparin in prophylactic doses and epidural/spinal anaesthesia.

Ulysses dust measurements near Jupiter.

Submicrometer- to micrometer-sized particles were recorded by the Ulysses dust detector within 40 days of the Jupiter flyby. Nine impacts were recorded within 50 Jupiter radii with most of them recorded after closest approach. Three of these impacts are consistent with particles on prograde orbits around Jupiter and the rest are believed to have resulted from gravitationally focused interplanetary dust.

Prostacyclin is produced from endothelial cell-seeded grafts: an experimental study in sheep.

Endothelial cell seeding might be of value in reducing the thrombogenicity of small-diameter vascular grafts. We investigated the capacity of endothelial cell-seeded grafts to produce prostacyclin and compared this with that of the unseeded graft as well as the native artery. Twelve sheep were operated on with carotid interposition of externally supported knitted dacron grafts.
