Background: Given the negative consequences associated with a penicillin allergy label, broader penicillin allergy delabeling initiatives are highly desirable but hindered by the shortage of allergists in the United States. To address this problem at our facility, the infectious diseases section introduced a quality improvement initiative to evaluate and remove allergy labels among inpatient veterans.
Methods: Between 15 November 2022 and 15 December 2023, we identified inpatients with a penicillin allergy label.
Background And Objectives: Multiple vessel-sealing devices are available for use during laparoscopy. The objective of this study is to determine what surgeon-level and device characteristics influence the choice of advanced energy device during gynecologic laparoscopy.
Methods: This is a national cross-sectional study of gynecologic surgeons conducted via social media, utilizing an online, publicly-available, anonymous survey.

The presence of a penicillin allergy label in a patient's medical chart is associated with negative clinical and economic outcomes. Given that less than 10% of reported reactions are truly immunoglobulin E-mediated, removal of unverified penicillin allergy labels is a public health priority and an area of ongoing implementation research. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, with almost 9 million veterans currently enrolled.

Rotavirus is a leading cause of severe diarrhea in young children. Like other fecal-oral pathogens, rotaviruses encounter abundant, constitutively expressed defensins in the small intestine. These peptides are a vital part of the vertebrate innate immune system.

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism has emerged as a central component of many neurodegenerative diseases. Variants of the lipid transport protein, apolipoprotein E (APOE), modulate risk and resilience in several neurodegenerative diseases including late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD). Allelic variants of the gene, APOE, alter the lipid metabolism of cells and tissues and have been broadly associated with several other cellular and systemic phenotypes.

This approach has the potential to increase unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics; therefore, additional strategies are needed to optimize appropriate antibiotic use. This study evaluates the effect of MRSA nasal PCR testing on MRSA-targeted antibiotic use and clinical outcomes in patients with DFI.

We conducted a single-center, retrospective, age- and sex-matched, cohort study, at a Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in South Texas. Eligible patients were at least 18 years of age with a monomicrobial BSI treated with a single oral BL or FQ antibiotic.

In recent years, although water quality prediction methods based on deep learning have achieved excellent performance in short-term prediction, these methods are unsuitable for long-term prediction because the accumulation use of short-term prediction will easily introduce noise. Furthermore, The long-term prediction task requires a large amount of data to train the model to obtain accurate prediction results.

Purpose: To report the treatment utilization patterns for hormone receptor-positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer in urban mainland China (CancerMPact®).
Methods: The results presented are from an online survey conducted in September 2019 with 45 physicians treating breast cancer patients from 11 cities in mainland China.
Results: Surveyed physicians reported that Stage I HR+/HER2(-) breast cancer patients are often treated with surgery alone (42%), whereas the use of surgery in combination with systemic therapy with or without radiotherapy increases in later stages (Stage II 67%, Stage III 77%).

Objective: To assess the comparative effectiveness and temporal changes in quality of life (QoL) outcomes after revascularisation, major lower extremity amputation (MLEA), and conservative management (CM) in chronic limb threatening ischaemia (CLTI).
Data Sources: MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science.
Review Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed on QoL measured by any QoL instrument in adult patients with CLTI after open surgery (OS), endovascular intervention (EVI), MLEA, or CM.
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is being evaluated for its potential to improve colonoscopic assessment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly with computer-aided image classifiers. This review evaluates the clinical application and diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) of AI algorithms in colonoscopy for IBD. A systematic review was performed on studies evaluating AI in colonoscopy of adult patients with IBD.

An international survey was sent to veterinarians to understand individual fracture characteristics and management strategies as they relate to outcomes, with the goal of better informing treatment procedures. The data set consisted of 79 fractures from 64 elephants (including Asian and African males and females), 44.

However, paper-based microfluidic sensors still have many deficiencies when it comes to the detection of some specific detectors such as blood glucose. For example, the processing procedure for microfluidic channels is tedious, the sensor electrodes are easily damaged by bending, and they can only be used as disposable products.

However, these guidelines have not been evaluated in clinical practice. We aimed to measure the impact of endoscopist education on the quality of gastroscopy based on these guidelines and the association between compliance with guidelines and the detection of clinically significant premalignant pathology such as Barrett's esophagus (BE), esophageal squamous dysplasia, gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM), and Helicobacter pylori.

While reviews have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness and safety of publicly available apps for BD, apps surveyed may not reflect what individuals with BD are using. The present study had two aims: first, to characterize the use of health apps to support mood and sleep amongst people with BD, and second, to evaluate the quality, safety and functionality of the most commonly used self-management apps.

Alpha-defensins can be potently antiviral and antibacterial; however, their primary sequences, the number of isoforms, and their activity against specific microorganisms often vary greatly between species, reflecting adaptation to species-specific pathogens. Therefore, alpha-defensins might influence not only microbial evolution and tissue tropism within a host but also species tropism and zoonotic potential.
