: A lack of diversity in the speech-language pathology profession is widely recognised internationally. The role of speech-language pathology education in reproduction of this homogeneity and as a barrier to diversification is little understood. The potential of blended online education to increase access to education and diversify the speech-language pathology profession is yet to be explored.

Large-scale migration into Britain during the Middle to Late Bronze Age.

Present-day people from England and Wales have more ancestry derived from early European farmers (EEF) than did people of the Early Bronze Age. To understand this, here we generated genome-wide data from 793 individuals, increasing data from the Middle to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in Britain by 12-fold, and western and central Europe by 3.5-fold.

Conversational speech of school-age children after syllable-timed speech treatment for stuttering.

The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate whether rhythmic speech was primarily responsible for stuttering reductions in four school-aged children after the instatement stage of the Westmead Program of syllable-timed speech (STS) intervention. The study was designed to inform further development of the program. Reduction in variability of vowel duration is a marker of STS, and it was predicted that this would be present in the children's conversational speech after Stage 1 of the program if they were using STS.

Psychological characteristics of early stuttering.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use psychological measures of pre-schoolers who stutter and their parents to inform causal theory development and influence clinical practices. This was done using data from a substantive clinical cohort of children who received early stuttering treatment.

Method: The cohort ( = 427) comprised parents and their children who were treated with the Lidcombe Program, the Westmead Program, and the Oakville Program.

Predictors of Lidcombe Program treatment dropout and outcome for early stuttering.

Background: Information is available about what predicts Lidcombe Program treatment time, but nothing is known about what predicts treatment prognosis.

Aims: To investigate the predictors of treatment dropout and treatment outcome for children who were treated for early stuttering with the Lidcombe Program (N = 277).

Methods & Procedures: A total of 32 variables were used as predictors in regression analyses of short- and medium-term Lidcombe Program outcome, and of treatment dropout.

Delphi Study: ASPAN Adult Patient Pain and Comfort Practices.

Purpose: The American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) is responsible for establishing evidence-based standards to guide perianesthesia nursing practice. The ASPAN model for evidence-based practice acknowledges the potential for the Delphi technique to identify priorities for perianesthesia research. The purpose of this Delphi study was to generate a consensus on pain and comfort among a panel of experts.

Three Lidcombe program clinic visit options: a phase II trial.

Purpose: Weekly clinic visits are recommended in the Lidcombe Program Treatment Guide (Packman et al., 2015). That specification is based on traditional speech-language pathology practices rather than empirical research, and two studies have suggested that such a format does not always occur in clinical communities.

Comparing marine distribution maps for seabirds during the breeding season derived from different survey and analysis methods.

Understanding how seabirds use the marine environment is key for marine spatial planning, and maps of their marine distributions derived from transect-based surveys and from tracking of individual bird's movements are increasingly available for the same geographic areas. Although the value of integrating these different datasets is well recognised, few studies have undertaken quantitative comparisons of the resulting distributions. Here we take advantage of four existing distribution maps and conduct a quantitative comparison for four seabird species (black-legged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla; European shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis; common guillemot Uria aalge; and razorbill Alca torda).

Shank3-deficient rats exhibit degraded cortical responses to sound.

Unlabelled: Individuals with SHANK3 mutations have severely impaired receptive and expressive language abilities. While brain responses are known to be abnormal in these individuals, the auditory cortex response to sound has remained largely understudied. In this study, we document the auditory cortex response to speech and non-speech sounds in the novel Shank3-deficient rat model.

An investigation of the effects of a speech-restructuring treatment for stuttering on the distribution of intervals of phonation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether stuttering reductions following the instatement phase of a speech-restructuring treatment for adults were accompanied by reductions in the frequency of short intervals of phonation (PIs). The study was prompted by the possibility that reductions in the frequency of short PIs is the mechanism underlying such reductions in stuttering.

Method: The distribution of PIs was determined for seven adults who stutter, before and immediately after the intensive phase of a speech-restructuring treatment program.

The Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention for Malaysian families: Four case studies.

Purpose: This study investigated the outcomes of implementing the Lidcombe Program, an evidence-based early intervention for stuttering, with four preschool children in Malaysia. Early stuttering intervention is currently underdeveloped in Malaysia, where stuttering treatment is often more assertion-based than evidence-based. Therefore, introducing an evidence-based early stuttering intervention is an important milestone for Malaysian preschoolers who stutter.

Using Simulation to Prepare Nursing Students for Professional Roles.

The current job market for nurses is variable and although there remains a projected shortage of nurses for the future, availability of entry-level positions has changed. This mixed-methods pilot study describes the successful use of simulated role-play to prepare senior nursing students (N = 66) for competitive job markets. The simulation laboratory was set up as a human resource department.

The proceedings of the 3rd Annual Deep Brain Stimulation Think Tank summarize the most contemporary clinical, electrophysiological, imaging, and computational work on DBS for the treatment of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease. Significant innovations of the past year are emphasized. The Think Tank's contributors represent a unique multidisciplinary ensemble of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, scientists, engineers, and members of industry.

Intervention trial of previous nonattender invitation for breast screening.

BreastCheck, the National Breast Screening Programme in the Republic of Ireland, invites women aged between 50 and 64 years biennially. A pilot intervention trial of invitation for screening of women not attending the previous appointment [previous nonattender (PNA)] was carried out that aimed at maximizing the efficiency of resources in terms of radiographer workload and scheduled appointment slots. The trial was conducted during screening round 5 at two of the regional units.
