WHAT IS THE CRIMINAL REGISTRATION STANDARD?

Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act (2009) in each Australian jurisdiction registered health practitioners, and in some instances students are required to provide their National Board with certain information when applying for registration.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A SPECIFIC CONSENT.

Healthcare practitioners are generally aware of the need to obtain a patient's consent before providing treatment to avoid legal liability. When practitioners fail to obtain a lawful consent it is possible that they could be subject to criminal and or civil proceedings.

INAPPROPRIATE ACCESS TO MEDICAL RECORDS -- A CASE OF PROFESSIONAL MISCONDUCT.

Health Professionals' code of ethics and conduct emphasise a duty of confidentiality owed to the patient by their treating health practitioner. While these codes are not laws they are often used in disciplinary tribunal matters in consideration of what is proper professional conduct.

FAILING TO IDENTIFY AND RESPOND TO THE DETERIORATING PATIENT: A CASE FOR THE CORONER.

The Coroners Court is a unique court that fulfills an important function in our legal system--determining the manner and cause of death of those who have died in unexpected or unexplained circumstances. With broad powers of investigation the Coroner through the coronial process will make findings and recommendations regarding the death or suspected deaths of individuals in their particular circumstances.

Rethinking attitudes to student clinical supervision and patient care: a change management success story.

Background: The aim of this project was to explore the process of change in a busy community dental clinic following a team development intervention designed to improve the management of student supervision during clinical placements.

Methods: An action research model was used. Seven members of a community dental clinic team (three dentists, two dental therapists, one dental assistant and the clinic manager), together with the university clinical placement supervisor participated in the team development intervention.

Taking responsibility for health care.

Advertising through mass media has been a useful strategy in the public health campaign to expose the population to messages on the negative impact of lifestyle choices on our general health such as smoking and obesity, which is now recognised as a growing public health issue.

Exploring nursing students' understanding of being regulated.

In Australia, a national approach to the regulation of health practitioners and students has been established through the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act (2009; Qld) (the National Act). Whilst regulation of nursing and midwifery students under this new scheme is novel in most jurisdictions, students in South Australia have been registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of South Australia under the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Act 2008 (SA) (the State Act) since January 2010. Given the significant move to national registration of nursing and midwifery students, a mixed method study was initiated exploring South Australian nursing students' understanding of being regulated.
