Impact of Anthropogenic Activities on Microbial Community Structure in Riverbed Sediments of East Kazakhstan.

Heavy metal (HMe) pollution in regions with mining and metallurgy activities is known to be a serious environmental problem worldwide. Hydrological processes contribute to the dissemination of HMes (drainage, precipitation, flow rate). The aim of the present study is to investigate the microbial community structure in ten river sediments sampled in different regions of East Kazakhstan, which are contaminated with HMes.

Decreased atmospheric deposition of heavy metals in Latvia shown by long-term monitoring using the moss Pleurozium schreberi.

In Europe, economic restructuring and technological progress has been aimed at reducing pollution emissions at local, regional and global scales, which has been monitored using standard methods. Among the many methods used to determine deposition of heavy metals, in Europe moss has been used to monitor atmospheric pollution for more than 30 years on a 5-year cycle. This simple method can be used to assess improvement to the environment after massive economic change.

Physiological stress and higher reproductive success in bumblebees are both associated with intensive agriculture.

Free-living organisms face multiple stressors in their habitats, and habitat quality often affects development and life history traits. Increasing pressures of agricultural intensification have been shown to influence diversity and abundance of insect pollinators, and it may affect their elemental composition as well. We compared reproductive success, body concentration of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), and C/N ratio, each considered as indicators of stress, in the buff-tailed bumblebee ().

Ecological Stoichiometry of Bumblebee Castes, Sexes, and Age Groups.

Ecological stoichiometry is important for revealing how the composition of chemical elements of organisms is influenced by their physiological functions and ecology. In this study, we investigated the elemental body composition of queens, workers, and males of the bumblebee , an important pollinator throughout Eurasia, North America, and northern Africa. Our results showed that body elemental content differs among castes.

Assessment of sapropel use for pharmaceutical products according to legislation, pollution parameters, and concentration of biologically active substances.

Development trends need the necessity for wider use of the local resources and available natural materials are one of the priorities around the world. Freshwater sapropel is a common material in the water basement of the lakes, but still not sufficiently explored. The main goal of the project to start detailed and systematic research on the medical properties of sapropel to be obtained in Latvia, promote its scientifically based use in balneology, develop new medical procedures and services, and promote development of new exportable products.
