Depression treatment strategies are within the scope of pediatric practice and among the competencies recommended by the Academy of Pediatrics and The American Board of Pediatrics. Treatments that may be provided through collaborative care include nonpharmacologic therapies such as psychosocial treatments and evidence-based psychotherapies, and pharmacotherapy and monitoring processes for depression. Abundant support and guidance are available to pediatricians in depression care, including mental health consultation and online materials.

Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients seeking EPE in the ED of a children's hospital between September and December 2018, which compares patients referred from the community versus those from schools as well as patients from schools with and without school-based mental health services (SMH).
The COVID-19 pandemic and related public health efforts limiting in-person social interactions present unique challenges to adolescents. Social media, which is widely used by adolescents, presents an opportunity to counteract these challenges and promote adolescent health and public health activism. However, public health organizations and officials underuse social media to communicate with adolescents.
