The informatics imperative in veterinary medicine: collaboration across disciplines.

Information and data management are essential to support the collaborative and interdisciplinary pursuits of an academic veterinary medicine enterprise, ranging from research conducted by individual investigators, education processes, clinical care, and outreach to administration and management. Informatics is an academic discipline that focuses on the creation, management, storage, retrieval, and use of information and data and how technology can be applied to improve access to and use of these resources. In this article, we discuss the challenges in integrating informatics across a large academic enterprise from a veterinary medicine point of view.

Consumer health information and local health resources: MedlinePlus and My Health Minnesota --> Go Local Outreach Efforts.

The University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries and an NLM Public Health Informationist Fellow are designing, implementing and evaluating outreach and training related to the My Health Minnesota --> Go Local project. The goal is to enhance the skills of public health and community based organizations in assisting community members with health information needs. Ultimately, this project seeks to improve health literacy among Minnesota citizens.

Androgen insensitivity syndrome and Klinefelter's syndrome: sex and gender considerations.

Two of the most common intersex conditions, androgen insensitivity and Klinefelter's syndrome, are described with an emphasis on aspects that are of relevance to psychiatrists. Attention is focused on commonalities and differences between these syndromes and particular attention is given to how persons who have these conditions manifest sexual and gender adjustments to their situations. Tips on counseling and medical management are offered.
