Generating science by training future scholars in nursing research addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.

This chapter focuses on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 National Research Service Award (NRSA) funding mechanism, designed to enhance the development of nurse scientists. The general history and principles underlying NIH funding for T32s as well as the National Institute of Nursing Research's (NINR) involvement in the NRSA program is described, highlighting the University of California Los Angeles School of Nursing's T32 training program in vulnerable populations research and the program and career trajectory data from close to two-thirds of NINR-funded T32s directors. Recommendations for the improvement of NINR-funded T32 training programs are identified.

Frost hardening of Pinus radiata seedlings: effects of temperature on relative growth rate, carbon balance and carbohydrate concentration.

Pinus radiata (D. Don) seedlings were grown for 100 days at day/night temperatures of 10/1, 15/1, 20/1 and 25/1 degrees C, to determine whether temperatures above a threshold of 5 degrees C influence frost hardiness development. Relationships between hardening and relative growth rate, carbohydrate concentration and net carbon balance were also investigated.

Describing an episode of home nursing care for elderly postsurgical cancer patients.

Background: While studies have documented the beneficial effect of home care for cancer patients, the actual interventions implemented during these studies have not been well described.

Objectives: Purposes of this study were to analyze interventions documented in narrative form by advanced practice nurses during a four-week episode of home care and describe intervention type, frequency, range, and variation over time in intervention emphasis and dose intensity.

Disclosure after a sibling's death from AIDS.

The purpose of this article was to describe patterns of disclosure among adults after their sibling's death from AIDS. A descriptive study design was done by use of a cross-sectional sample including 87 adults from separate families. Sibling responses were audiotaped and content analyzed.
