Ischemic events can culminate in acute myocardial infarction, which is generated by irreversible cardiac lesions that cannot be restored due to the limited regenerative capacity of the heart. Cardiac cell therapy aims to replace injured or necrotic cells with healthy and functional cells. Tissue engineering and cardiovascular regenerative medicine propose therapeutic alternatives using biomaterials that mimic the native extracellular environment and improve cellular and tissue functionality.
