Although selenium (Se) and cadmium (Cd) often coexist naturally in the soil of China, the health risks to local residents consuming Se-Cd co-enriched foods are unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effects of chemical-based selenocystine (SeCys) on cadmium chloride-induced human hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) cell injury and plant (Cardamine hupingshanensis)-derived SeCys against Cd-induced liver injury in mice. We found that chemical- and plant-based SeCys showed protective effects against Cd-induced HepG2 cell injury and liver damage in mice, respectively.

Selenium (Se) is a dietary essential trace element for humans with various physiological functions and it could also be accumulated by some plant species, like Astragalus bisulcatus, Stanleya pinnata, and Cardamine hupinshanensis. A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, selenite-tolerant bacterium, designated strain YLX-1 , was isolated from the rhizosphere of a Se hyperaccumulating plant, Cardamine hupingshanensis in Enshi, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YLX-1 is a potential new species in the genus Wautersiella.

In this study, we investigated the protective effects and possible mechanism of epigallocatechin-3-o-gallate (EGCG) combined with organic selenium in transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1-activated LX-2 cells. After 12 h of starvation, LX-2 cells were treated with 10 ng/ml of recombinant TGF-β1 and different concentrations of EGCG, L-selenomethionine (L-SeMet), or L-selenomethylcysteine (L-SeMC) for 24 h. We found that 100 and 200 μM EGCG combined with 1 mM L-SeMet or L-SeMC showed a synergistic effect in decreasing the survival rate of activated LX-2 cells.

Since the potato is a new staple food in China, the production of selenium (Se)-enriched potato may be an effective approach for Se supplementation in Se-deficient populations. We measured total mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations as well as stable nitrogen (N) isotopic composition in flyingfish and squid muscle tissues from the eastern Indian Ocean and western South China Sea. The results showed that the mean Hg concentration in squid muscle from the western South China Sea was lower than that in the eastern Indian Ocean. The Hg concentrations in flyingfish and squid muscle samples were positively correlated with organism size (length and weight) and δN in all the study areas.
