Magnesium plays an important role in the body, mediating cell-extracellular matrix interactions and bone apatite structure and density. This study investigated, for the first time, the effects of adding magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles to poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and to hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticle-PLLA composites for orthopedic tissue engineering applications. Results showed that MgO nanoparticles significantly enhanced osteoblast adhesion and proliferation on HA-PLLA nanocomposites while maintaining mechanical properties (Young's modulus ∼1,000 MPa) suitable for cancellous bone applications.

Chemical exfoliation method was applied to transform bulky assemblies of Au(I)-3-mercaptopropionate (MPA) coordination polymer (CP) to nanosheets and nanostrings using sodium citrate as an exfoliator. The exfoliation process and the structural characteristics of the Au(I)-MPA nanosheets and nanostrings were fully investigated by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and so on. As the structural rigidity and stability of the obtained Au(I)-MPA nanosheets, they are ideal precursors for fabrication of water soluble gold nanoparticle assemblies through progressive pyrolysis.

Background: Plasma-spray deposition of hydroxyapatite on titanium (Ti) has proven to be a suboptimal solution to improve orthopedic-implant success rates, as demonstrated by the increasing number of orthopedic revision surgeries due to infection, implant loosening, and a myriad of other reasons. This could be in part due to the high heat involved during plasma-spray deposition, which significantly increases hydroxyapatite crystal growth into the nonbiologically inspired micron regime. There has been a push to create nanotopographies on implant surfaces to mimic the physiological nanostructure of native bone and, thus, improve osteoblast (bone-forming cell) functions and inhibit bacteria functions.

In this study, 316L stainless steel with tunable nanometer pit sizes (0, 25, 50, and 60 nm) were fabricated by an anodization procedure in an ethylene glycol electrolyte solution containing 5 vol % perchloric acid. The surface morphology and elemental composition of the 316L stainless steel were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
