Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to find key ultrasonography markers and clinical signs that can predict the progression of carotid artery involvement in patients with Takayasu's arteritis over a one-year period.
  • - Out of 77 patients, 16 showed progression in carotid artery issues during the follow-up, with younger age, thicker vessel walls, and a higher prevalence of refractory disease being significant indicators of this progression.
  • - The findings suggest that younger patients with thicker carotid walls (≥1.9 mm) and refractory disease are at a greater risk for carotid progression, indicating the need for closer monitoring in these individuals.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical studies link high uric acid levels (hyperuricemia) to cardiovascular diseases, but the mechanisms are unclear; this study investigates how uric acid affects heart cells (cardiomyocytes).
  • H9c2 cardiomyocytes exposed to varying uric acid levels showed increased expression of genes related to heart enlargement (hypertrophy) and changes in cell surface area, with autophagy both being activated and mitigated by specific inhibitors.
  • The study concludes that uric acid causes heart cell enlargement through autophagy activation via the AMPK-ULK1 pathway, suggesting that lowering uric acid levels could help reduce heart hypertrophy in patients.

Background: Takayasu arteritis-induced renal arteritis (TARA), commonly seen in Takayasu arteritis (TA), has become one of the main causes of poor prognosis and early mortality in patients with TA. TARA progressing into Takayasu arteritis-induced renal artery stenosis (TARAS), could lead to severe complications including malignant hypertension, cardiac-cerebral vascular disease, and ischemic nephropathy. Since there existed no guidelines on treatments, this study aimed to review the comprehensive treatments for TARA.
