Conductive hydrogels hold great promise for flexible electronics. However, the simultaneous achievement of satisfactory mechanical strength, outstanding environmental tolerance, high sensitivity, and multiple sensing applications in a single conductive hydrogel remains a significant challenge. Herein, ionic polymer-based hydrogels with a double conductive network consisting of [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and silver nanoparticle decorated cellulose nanocrystal (CNC@Ag) are prepared by a facile one-pot method.

Prohibited item detection in X-ray images is one of the most essential and highly effective methods widely employed in various security inspection scenarios. Considering the significant overlapping phenomenon in X-ray prohibited item images, we propose an anti-overlapping detection transformer (AO-DETR) based on one of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) general object detectors, DETR with improved denoising anchor boxes (DINO). Specifically, to address the feature coupling issue caused by overlapping phenomena, we introduce the category-specific one-to-one assignment (CSA) strategy to constrain category-specific object queries in predicting prohibited items of fixed categories, which can enhance their ability to extract features specific to prohibited items of a particular category from the overlapping foreground-background features.

Protein properties can be modified by thermal treatment at different pH values, resulting in the formation of protein aggregates with diverse morphologies and functionalities. This study investigated the morphology of aggregates of Antarctic krill protein (AKPS) formed by thermal treatment (90 °C, 15 min) at pH 2, 3, 4, and 6-12, characterized the different morphologies of AKPS, and determined the metal ion (Ca, Fe, and Zn)-binding capacities. Results showed that heat treatment with different pH values generated various AKPS with distinct morphology and metal ion-binding abilities.

Introduction: Despite receiving alectinib therapy, patients with ALK-positive NSCLC remain at risk of central nervous system (CNS) progression. Our retrospective study aimed to identify baseline clinical and molecular factors associated with the risk of CNS progression in this patient subset.

Methods: We analyzed the clinical, molecular, and imaging data of 318 patients with ALK-positive advanced NSCLC who received alectinib as first-line (1L-alectinib) or second-line (2L-alectinib) therapy at baseline (1L, n = 183; 2L, n = 135) and at disease progression (1L, n = 80; 2L, n = 76).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between the monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) and osteoporosis in elderly individuals, finding that a lower MHR is associated with a higher risk of developing osteoporosis.
  • - An analysis of data from 563 participants aged 70 and older showed significant differences in MHR among various osteoporosis groups, with positive correlations found between MHR and bone mineral density (BMD).
  • - The findings suggest that MHR, alongside body mass index (BMI), is an independent risk factor for osteoporosis and could serve as a valuable predictive tool in clinical settings.

In this work, we demonstrate a straightforward and versatile approach for fabricating flexible SERS substrates for highly sensitive fentanyl detection. Our design strategy integrates the synthesis of a yolk-shell structured plasmonic nanomaterial with a flexible cellulose substrate. The resulting SERS platform demonstrates excellent sensing capabilities, achieving a fentanyl detection limit as low as 4.

Objectives: Labyrinthitis significantly reduces quality of life due to prolonged vestibular symptoms in patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss with vertigo (SSNHLV). This study employed a novel coherence analysis in the video head impulse test (vHIT) to explore vertigo outcomes in SSNHLV patients.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted on 48 SSNHLV patients who completed high-dose steroid treatment between December 2016 and April 2023.

The experience of pain is complex, involving both sensory and affective components, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we show that formalin-induced pain behaviors coincide with increased responses in glutamatergic neurons within the anterior paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVA). Furthermore, we describe non-overlapping subpopulations of PVAVgluT2 neurons involved in sensory and affective pain processing, whose activity varies across different pain states.

Histidine modifications of proteins are broadly based on chemical methods triggering N-substitution reactions such as aza-Michael addition at histidine's moderately nucleophilic imidazole side chain. While recent studies have demonstrated chemoselective, histidine-specific modifications by further exploiting imidazole's electrophilic reactivity to overcome interference from the more nucleophilic lysine and cysteine, achieving site-specific histidine modifications remains a major challenge due to the absence of spatial control over chemical processes. Herein, through X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy structural studies, we describe the rational design of a nature-inspired, noncanonical amino-acid-incorporated, human ferritin-based metalloenzyme that is capable of introducing site-specific post-translational modifications (PTMs) to histidine in peptides and proteins.

This study involved the design and fabrication of a microfluidic chip integrated with permalloy micromagnets. The device was used with aptamer-modified magnetic beads (MBs) of various sizes to successfully separate lung cancer cells from a mixture of other cells. The overall separation efficiency was evaluated based on the ratios of cells in the different outlets and inlets of the chip.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification orchestrates cellular epitranscriptome through tuning the homeostasis of transcript stability, translation efficiency, and the transcript affinity toward RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). An aberrant m6A deposition on RNA can lead toward oncogenic expression profile (mRNA), impaired mitochondrial metabolism (mtRNA), and translational suppression (rRNA) of tumor suppressor genes. In addition, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), such as X-inactive specific transcript (XIST), miRNAs, and α-ketoglutarate-centric metabolic transcripts are also regulated by the m6A epitranscriptome.

Phosphatidylinositol signaling system plays a crucial role in plant physiology and development, phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinases (PIPKs) are one of the essential enzymes responsible for catalyzing the synthesis of phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2) within this signaling pathway. However, its mechanism of signal transduction remains poorly exploited in plants. OsMBL1, a jacalin-related mannose-binding lectin in rice, plays a crucial role in plant defense mechanisms, acting as a key component of the pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) pathway.

Cilia are membrane-bound organelles found on the surface of most mammalian cell types and play numerous roles in human physiology and development, including osmo- and mechanosensation, as well as signal transduction. Ciliopathies are a large group of, usually rare, genetic disorders resulting from abnormal ciliary structure or ciliary dysfunction that have a high collective prevalence. Autosomal dominant or recessive polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD/ARPKD), Bardet-Biedl-Syndrome, and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) are the most frequent etiologies.

Methane (CH4) oxidation is an important reaction to reduce the greenhouse effect caused by incomplete combustion of CH4. Here, we explored the mechanism of CH4 oxidation catalyzed by CeO2 and Ni-doped CeO2, focusing on the redox properties of these catalyst surfaces, using density functional theory (DFT). We found that the barriers for CH4* activation and H2O* formation are correlated with the surface redox capacity, which is enhanced by Ni doping.
