Since progressive addition lenses (PALs) are currently state-of-the-art in multifocal correction for presbyopia, it is important to study the methods for evaluating PALs. A nonoptical simulation method used to accurately characterize PALs during the design and optimization process is proposed in this paper. It involves the direct calculation of each surface of the lens according to the lens heights of front and rear surfaces.

We use aberration theory to derive a generalized pupil function of the Golay3 imaging system when astigmatisms exist in its submirrors. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation using ZEMAX show that the point spread function (PSF) and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the Golay3 sparse aperture system have a periodic change when there are piston errors. When the peak-valley value of the wavefront (PV(tilt)) due to the tilt error increases from zero to λ, the PSF and the MTF change significantly, and the change direction is determined by the location of the submirror with the tilt error.

IscA is a key member of the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery found in bacteria and eukaryotes, but the mechanism of its function in the biogenesis of iron-sulfur cluster remains elusive. In this paper, we demonstrate that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans IscA is a [4Fe-4S] cluster binding protein, and it can bind iron in the presence of DTT with an apparent iron association constant of 4·10(20) M(-1). The iron binding in IscA can be promoted by oxygen through oxidizing ferrous iron to ferric iron.

We demonstrate single-atom resolution, as well as detection sensitivity more than 20 dB below the quantum projection noise limit, for hyperfine-state-selective measurements on mesoscopic ensembles containing 100 or more atoms. The measurement detects the atom-induced shift of the resonance frequency of an optical cavity containing the ensemble. While spatially varying coupling of atoms to the cavity prevents the direct observation of a quantized signal, the demonstrated measurement resolution provides the readout capability necessary for atomic interferometry substantially below the standard quantum limit and down to the Heisenberg limit.

Angiogenesis is a critical factor in tumor growth and metastasis, and microvessel density (MVD) was an important parameter for assessing vessels in tumors. However, radiologic assessment of tumor vascularity is not yet well established. In our study, we aimed at investigating the efficacy of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in exploring the vascularity of the ovarian tumors or tumor-like lesions to assess the relationship between the parameters of the peak intensity (PI) and area under curve (AUC) on CEUS and MVD in ovarian masses.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the utility of sonography with the echo-tracking (ET) technique to assess vascular stiffness in rabbits with hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. Grayscale sonography associated with the ET technique was used to measure the elastic modulus (Ep) of the aorta in cholesterol-fed rabbits (group T1, n = 44, for 4 weeks; group T2, n = 44, for 12 weeks) and normal control rabbits (group C1, n = 44; group C2, n = 44). The aortic Ep values and blood biochemical markers between groups were compared using analysis of covariance.

Introduction: The effects of angiotensin (Ang) IV result from binding to a constitutively active metallopeptidase known as the AT(4) receptor (or oxytocinase/insulin-regulated membrane aminopeptidase). While in vitro evidence indicates that Ang IV inhibits the peptidase activity of AT(4) receptors, leading to increases in the concentrations of several peptides, including oxytocin, the consequence of inhibiting AT(4) peptidase activity in vivo remains unresolved.

Discussion: Microdialysis coupled to immunoassay techniques revealed that systemic and intra-amygdala injection of Nle-Ang IV, a metabolically stable derivative of Ang IV, significantly elevated extracellular levels of oxytocin in the rat amygdala.

Conclusions: The longitudinal findings presented in this study suggest that with the maturational development, the conduction time of the auditory nerve decreases while the thresholds had no physiological changes within 0-6 months after birth. Comparing the tone-pip auditory brainstem response (ABR) with the auditory steady-state response (ASSR), the former had lower thresholds than the latter at 500-8000 Hz, which indicates that the estimation of tone-pip ABR maybe nearer to the actual hearing level of infants.

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of tone-pip ABR and ASSR for newborns and infants, and to follow the development of the threshold estimates from tone-pip ABR and ASSR in normal infants through the first 6 months of life.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to track the development of hearing in normal infants by comparing tone-pip auditory brainstem response (ABR) and auditory steady-state response (ASSR) thresholds over the first six months of life.
  • Researchers tested 160 ears from infants at various ages (2-4 days, 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months) across a frequency range of 0.25 to 8 kHz.
  • Results showed that as infants aged, key wave latencies in tone-pip ABR decreased, indicating maturation, and tone-pip ABR thresholds were significantly lower than ASSR thresholds, suggesting it may better reflect true hearing levels in infants.
