The moisture stability of tobacco shred, a typical porous carbohydrate material, is very important during its processing, storage and smoking, moreover, it is sensitive to environmental conditions. Therefore, effect of sucrose esters (SEs) and sucrose ester/Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharide mixture (SPMs) on the moisture retention and moisture resistance of tobacco shred was assessed. When SEs were added to tobacco shred, moisture resistance was significantly enhanced, whereas moisture holding capacity was attenuated.

Bioreducible crosslinked polyplexes from branched polyethylenimine (BPEI, 10 kDa) were successfully constructed through DNA neutralization by disulfide-linked azidated BPEI (PAZ) and subsequent DNA condensation by azadibenzocyclooctyne-modified BPEI (PDB), following their self-crosslinking via azide-azadibenzocyclooctyne click chemistry. Click-crosslinked cationic polyplexes (c-polyplexes) revealed high extracellular colloidal stability against negative heparin and ions while intracellular bioreducible degradability for efficient gene unpacking. In vitro gene transfection in cancer cells indicated that the c-polyplexes produced markedly higher transfection efficiency than non-crosslinked counterparts in the serum.

Semiconductor junctions are believed to form a depletion region at the band edge of the semiconductor as the chemical potentials for electrons (work functions) are aligned to the same level. Here, we demonstrated that ultrathin Ni film (less than 4 nm thick)/Si junction-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices have no depletion region due to three distinct phenomena: (i) the electrostatic or electrochemical potential extrinsically charged to the electrolytic-capacitive Ni surface dominates rather than the chemical potential of electrons (work function) of the bulk Ni, (ii) the charged potential is dynamically variable depending on the reaction and is rapidly volatile so as not to be constant; therefore, (iii) the charged potential is misaligned with the chemical potential of Si under equivalent circuit conditions. Such junction PEC devices were shown to follow a novel operating principle in which the output voltage (open circuit potential) is generated by the electrochemical potential charged at the Ni surface, and not by the light-induced potential (photovoltage) in Si.

Soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization represents one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon cycle. Numerous studies have shown that soil organic carbon decomposition was largely changed owing to the addition of litter, however very few studies have focused on the role of plant organs in the priming effects (PEs). Here, we studied the effects of different Pinus massoniana organs (fresh leaf, leaf litter, twigs, absorptive fine roots, and transport fine roots) on C4 soil respiration by applying the 13C isotopic natural abundance method.

Degenerative changes to rotator cuff tendons are often diagnosed in elderly patients. Spontaneous healing of degenerative tendons is rather inefficient as a result of the lack of a suitable microenvironment for tendon stem cell differentiation and vascularization. Herein, multilayer hyaluronic acid/chitosan (HA/CS) nanofilms were assembled by a layer-by-layer assembly method onto aligned poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers for use in healing degenerative tendons.

Background: Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), play critical roles in numerous biochemical reactions. Our aim is to develop a rapid and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of ALA, EPA, DHA and DPA in the plasma of hyperlipidemic and normolipidemic subjects.

Methods: An ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (UPLC-MS/MS) method of ALA, EPA, DHA, and DPA was developed with chlorzoxazone as the internal standard (IS).

This paper presents a positioning error model and a control compensation scheme for a six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) micro-positioner based on a compliant mechanism and piezoelectric actuators (PZT). The positioning error model is established by means of the kinematic model of the compliant mechanism and complete differential coefficient theory, which includes the relationships between three typical errors (hysteresis, machining and measuring errors) and the total positioning error. The quantitative analysis of three errors is demonstrated through several experimental studies.

Previous studies revealed important roles of small RNAs (sRNAs) in regulation of bacterial metabolism, stress responses and virulence. However, only a minor fraction of sRNAs is well characterized with respect to the spectra of their targets, conditional expression profiles and actual mechanisms they use to regulate gene expression to control particular biological pathways. To learn more about the specific contribution of sRNAs to the global regulatory network controlling the Escherichia coli central carbon metabolism (CCM), we employed microarray analysis and compared transcriptome profiles of E.

The search for cationic polymeric carriers enabling robust gene transfection against stem cells remains a challenge. Herein, linear bioreducible poly(urethane amine)s (denoted as SSPUAs) with repeated disulfide and protonable amino groups were prepared and used as non-viral vectors for in vitro gene transfection of different stem cells. The polyurethane copolymers (denoted as SSBT) with varied molar ratios of 1,4-bis(3-aminopropyl)piperazine (BAP) and tris(2-aminoethyl) amine (TAA) moieties could lead to superb transfection activity against human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) and human bone marrow stem cells (hBMSCs).
