Background: In order to continue to efficiently provide both personnel-intensive and resource-intensive care to severely injured patients, some hospitals have introduced individually differentiated systems for resuscitation room treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concept of the A and B classifications in terms of practicability, indications, and potential complications at a national trauma center in Bavaria.

Methods: In a retrospective study, data from resuscitation room trauma patients in the year 2020 were collected.

The AAPM has more than 8000 members and is the principal organization of medical physicists in the United States. The AAPM will periodically define new practice guidelines for medical physics practice to help advance the science of medical physics and to improve the quality of service to patients throughout the United States.

Effects of the SARS-CoV‑2 pandemic on residency training in orthopedics and traumatology in Germany : A nationwide survey.

Background: The spread of the coronavirus disease has impacted healthcare systems worldwide; however, restrictions due to the SARS-CoV‑2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic are particularly drastic for physicians in residency training. Imposed restrictions interrupt the standard educational curricula, and consequently limited residents to meet mandatory requirements.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the SARS-CoV‑2 pandemic on residency training in orthopedics and trauma surgery in Germany.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide guidance on quality management for electronic brachytherapy.

Materials And Methods: The task group used the risk-assessment approach of Task Group 100 of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Because the quality management program for a device is intimately tied to the procedure in which it is used, the task group first designed quality interventions for intracavitary brachytherapy for both commercial electronic brachytherapy units in the setting of accelerated partial-breast irradiation.

Panic and comorbid depression and their associations with stress reactivity, interoceptive awareness and interoceptive accuracy of various bioparameters.

Background: While current theories on perception of interoceptive signals suggest impaired interoceptive processing in psychiatric disorders such as panic disorder or depression, heart-rate (HR) interoceptive accuracy (IAc) of panic patients under resting conditions is superior to that of healthy controls. Thus, in this study, we chose to assess further physiological parameters and comorbid depression in order to get information on how these potentially conflicting findings are linked together.

Design: We used a quasi-experimental laboratory design which included multi-parametric physiological data collection of 40 panic subjects and 53 matched no-panic controls, as well as experimental induction of stress and relaxation over a time-course.

Cancer and pregnancy: the clinician's perspective.

Although uncommon, the incidence of cancer complicating pregnancy is increasing. Managing these pregnancies creates many diagnostic, therapeutic, and ethical dilemmas for the patient, her family, and the medical care team. Postpartum wound and bleeding complications in women who received peripartum anticoagulation.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to compare wound and bleeding complications between women who received anticoagulation after cesarean delivery due to history of prior venous thromboembolic disease, arterial disease, or being a thrombophilia carrier with adverse pregnancy outcome, to women not receiving anticoagulation.

Methods: Women in the Duke Thrombosis Center Registry who underwent cesarean delivery during 2003-2011 and received postpartum anticoagulation (anticoagulation group, n=77), were compared with a subset of women who delivered during the same time period, but did not receive anticoagulation (no anticoagulation group, n=77). Early life history transitions and recruitment of Picea mariana in thawed boreal permafrost peatlands.

Black spruce (Picea mariana) is the most abundant tree species in the boreal biome, but little is known about how climate warming may change recruitment in peatlands, especially those affected by permafrost thaw. We used results from a seven-year study in northern Manitoba, Canada, to address the following questions: (1) What is the relative importance of early life history transitions on P. mariana recruitment? (2) How are these transitions mediated by biological and environmental factors, including competition, facilitation, disease, herbivory, water table depth, and soil nutrients? (3) Do interactions among these factors create additional recruitment limitations beyond those imposed by environmental factors changing with climate warming, such as hydrology? Seed rain was measured over six years on forested permafrost plateaus and in neighboring collapse scar bogs.

Diabetes mellitus and gastric emptying: questions and issues in clinical practice.

It is long known that both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can be associated with changes in gastric emptying; a number of publications have linked diabetes to delayed gastric emptying of variable severity and often with poor relationship to gastrointestinal symptomatology. In contrast, more recent studies have reported accelerated gastric emptying when adjusted for glucose concentration in patients with diabetes, indicating a reciprocal relationship between gastric emptying and ambient glucose concentrations. This review proposes that gastroparesis or gastroparesis diabeticorum, a severe condition characterized by a significant impairment of gastric emptying accompanied by severe nausea, vomiting, and malnutrition, is often overdiagnosed and not well contrasted with delays in gastric emptying.

Precautions in the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) represents a significant technological advancement in the ability to deliver highly conformal radiation therapy. Thanks to increased availability, general clinical implementation has become progressively more common. [Video-assisted hemithyroidectomy: surgical technique and early results].

To date, there are only very few data on minimally invasive thyroid surgery. In a prospective study (11/99-11/00), videoscopically assisted hemithyroidectomy was performed on 18 patients (3 M, 15 F; age 22-56 years) with uninodular thyroid disease. The length of the cervical incision was between 15 and 25 mm; 8 patients were operated on using initial gas insufflation and 10 patients with a gasless technique.

Induction of antibody response by DNA immunization of newborn baboons against influenza virus.

Previous studies showed that DNA immunization of newborn mice with plasmids expressing influenza virus antigens induced protective immunity. We have now extended the study of neonatal responsiveness to DNA vaccines to nonhuman primates. Baboons immunized as neonates with plasmids expressing type A influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) and nucleoprotein (NP) in doses ranging from 40 microg to 1 mg per plasmid per dose developed virus-specific humoral responses.

[Indirect traumatic diaphragmatic ruptures after blunt abdominal or thoracic trauma].

Traumatic diaphragmatic rupture after blunt thoracic or abdominal trauma is an indicator of serious associated injuries, but is itself often occult. Its diagnosis is still a challenge. In 14 consecutive patients with diaphragmatic rupture we developed a strategy for diagnostic work-up and therapy of diaphragmatic disruption.

[Intrahepatic pressure, oxygen partial pressure and pain in chronic pancreatitis].

We investigated the relationship between pain, intraductal and parenchymal pancreatic pressures and oxygen partial pressure in 39 patients who underwent surgery for chronic pancreatitis with intractable pain. Acute pain was correlated with parenchymal pressure; correlation between pain and oxygen pressure could not be found. Since no strong correlation exists between pain and parenchymal pressure, we hypothesise that pressure and parenchymal factors contribute to the pathogenesis of pain in chronic pancreatitis.

Multi-visceral resection for locally advanced gastric cancer.
