Background: Recent evidences showed that resection of lung tumor post-targeted therapy has shown progression-free survival (PFS) benefits in initially unresectable patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate pathologic findings of resected lung tumor samples in patients who have undergone prior epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) treatment, and also to assess the prognostic factors related to outcomes after resection.

Methods: The deidentified data of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients admitted to seven university hospitals affiliated with the Catholic University of Korea were obtained from the Clinical Data Warehouse (CDW) database.

Aging is often accompanied by a decline in proteostasis, manifested as an increased propensity for misfolded protein aggregates, which are prevented by protein quality control systems, such as the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and macroautophagy/autophagy. Although the role of the UPS and autophagy in slowing age-induced proteostasis decline has been elucidated, limited information is available on how these pathways can be activated in a collaborative manner to delay proteostasis-associated aging. Here, we show that activation of the UPS via the pharmacological inhibition of USP14 (ubiquitin specific peptidase 14) using IU1 improves proteostasis and autophagy decline caused by aging or proteostatic stress in and human cells.

In this News and Views, I discuss our recent publication that established how steroidogenic acute regulatory-related lipid transfer domain-3 (STARD3), a membrane contact protein situated at lysosomal membranes, plays a role in the detoxification of cholesterol hydroperoxide. STARD3's methionine residues can be oxidized to methionine sulfoxide by cholesterol hydroperoxide, after which methionine sulfoxide reductases reduce the methionine sulfoxide residues back to methionine. The reaction also results in the reduction of the cholesterol hydroperoxide to an alcohol.

The COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the co-occurrence of influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), has emphasized the requirement for efficient and reliable multiplex diagnostic methods for respiratory infections. While existing multiplex detection techniques are based on reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and extraction and purification kits, the need for complex instrumentation and elevated cost limit their scalability and availability. In this study, we have developed a point-of-care (POC) device based on reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) that can simultaneously detect four respiratory viruses (SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A, Influenza B, and RSV) and perform two controls in less than 30 min, while avoiding the use of the RNA extraction kit.
