Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis rates in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients to those in a general population, highlighting specific SSc-related factors influencing BMD.
  • It involved 211 SSc patients (majority women) and 505 control participants, measuring BMD at the hip and lumbar spine using X-ray technology, with specific criteria for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
  • Results showed significantly lower BMD in SSc patients, particularly women, with factors like age, BMI, menopause, and certain SSc symptoms (like finger ulcers) contributing to decreased BMD, highlighting the need for bone health evaluations in all SSc patients.

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune systemic disease with an annual incidence in Sweden of only 20 cases per million and a standardised mortality rate of 3-4. Disease onset is usually preceded by a period with Raynaud's phenomenon, combined with structurally abnormal nailbed capillaries and accompanied by presence of scleroderma related autoantibodies. The presenting symptoms are skin thickness, puffy fingers, digital ulcers, dysphagia, joint stiffness and pain, and pruritus.

Eighteen crossbred boars, three siblings from each of six litters, were distributed randomly among three groups after weaning. The 'Natural long-day' group was housed in a standard room with windows, whereas the 'Artificial long-day' and 'Artificial short-day' groups were housed in light-sealed rooms and under an artificial light regimen (1400 lx). In spring (16-17 hr of light) plasma levels of melatonin and cortisol were measured in samples collected hourly for 24 hr.

1. The rate of inbreeding and its effect on reproduction and egg production traits were studied in White Leghorn lines selected for egg production traits. The experiment was carried out for 10 generations in a control line (C) and in lines selected for increased egg number (EN), egg weight (EW) and egg mass (EM).

Effects of aging on oviposition pattern and egg production traits were studied based on records made between age at first egg and 130 wk of age in 479 hens from three selection lines. During the 1st laying yr (age at first egg to 71 wk of age), all three lines produced equal amounts of egg mass. A significant (P < or = .
