A novel mouthrinse (IND 61,164) containing essential oils and extracts from four plant species (Melaleuca alternifolia, Leptospermum scoparium, Calendula officinalis and Camellia sinensis) were tested. Diverticular disease refers to symptomatic and asymptomatic disease with an underlying pathology of colonic diverticula. Predisposing factors for the formation of diverticula include a low-fiber diet and physical inactivity. Approximately 85 percent of patients with diverticula are believed to remain asymptomatic.

Objective: To revise and expand the 1992 edition of the clinical practice guidelines for the management of diabetes in Canada incorporating recent advances in diagnosis and outpatient management of diabetes mellitus and to identify and assess the evidence supporting these recommendations.

Options: All aspects of ambulatory diabetes care, including organization, responsibilities, classification, diagnosis, management of metabolic disorders, and methods for screening, prevention and treatment of complications in all forms of diabetes were reviewed, revised as required and expressed as a set of recommendations.

Outcomes: Reclassification of types of diabetes based on pathogenesis; increased sensitivity of diagnostic criteria; recommendations for screening for diabetes; improved delivery of care; recommendations for tighter metabolic control; and optimal methods for screening, prevention and treatment of complications of diabetes.

We believe we report the first case of malignant juxtadrenal schwannoma. This rare tumor was discovered incidentally in a patient who presented with fever, mental confusion, weight loss, leukocytosis, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Preoperative radiographic and endocrine evaluations were suggestive of a nonfunctioning adrenal tumor.

Stumptailed monkeys (Macaca arctoides) received 2000 rad irradiation to the upper half of the esophagus and to the bladder by a 6-MEV linear accelerator. Endoscopy and biopsy was obtained from these organs weekly for 3 weeks. At the end of this period, the animals were autopsied and histopathologic examination undertaken.

Following surgical removal of esophageal tumors, leakage and mediastinitis is a frequent and often fatal complication. A new method has been developed to seal suture lines in the esophagus with preparations containing fibrinogen, cold insoluble globulin, factor XIII, antiplasmin, platelet growth factor, thrombin, and calcium chloride. In experimental animals operated on by standard methods, esophageal leakage developed in 50% of the animals and death in 40%.

This study describes an experimental model for the investigation of nephrotoxicity in which the aminoglycoside, gentamicin, is given after unilateral ureteral obstruction is produced. The preliminary findings indicate a significantly more severe loss of renal function in the obstructed kidney which receives gentamicin than in the obstructed kidney which does not.
