Article Synopsis
  • Juncus species are traditional sources of phenanthrene compounds used in Chinese medicine, particularly effusol and juncusol, which have shown antimicrobial and anticancer properties.
  • This study investigated their effects on the growth and biochemical processes of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, focusing on how these compounds influence polyamine metabolism.
  • Results indicated that while phenanthrene is toxic to plant growth, both effusol and juncusol promote biomass increase and improve antioxidant defenses, suggesting their potential as biopesticides or plant growth stimulants.

The fluorinated glucocorticoid betamethasone stimulated both the extracellular phospholipase production and hypha formation of the opportunistic human pathogen Candida albicans and also decreased the efficiency of the polyene antimycotics amphotericin B and nystatin against C. albicans in a dose-dependent manner. Importantly, betamethasone increased synergistically the anti-Candida activity of the oxidative stress generating agent menadione, which may be exploited in future combination therapies to prevent or cure C.

Several studies have reported that interactions of mothers with preterm infants show differential characteristics compared to that of mothers with full-term infants. Interaction of preterm dyads is often reported as less harmonious. However, observations and explanations concerning the underlying mechanisms are inconsistent.
