Background: Anal fistula treatment aims to eradicate the fistula, preserve the sphincter, prevent recurrence, and allow an early return to daily activities for the patient. Because of the difficulty of achieving these goals, stem cell-based therapy has emerged for the treatment of complex perianal fistula with promising results.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of complex anal fistula in patients without Crohn's disease.

Cholecystectomy is the only definitive management of pancreatitis secondary to gallstone disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of patients with acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP) will have persistent common bile duct (CBD) stones. Therefore, choosing a method for the early diagnosis of choledocholithiasis is essential to reduce waiting days for surgery and hospital stay in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Mexico has a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, and laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a recommended surgical option for acute appendicitis (AA), but local evidence is lacking.
  • A study included 27 patients (5 overweight and 22 obese) who underwent LA, showing no need for surgical conversion and an overall complication rate of 29.6%, primarily mild.
  • The findings suggest that outcomes of LA for obese adults with AA in Mexico are comparable to those observed in other countries, indicating its effectiveness in this population.
