The β4 nicotinic receptor subunit modulates the chronic antidepressant effect mediated by bupropion.

The objective of the current study is to investigate the role of the nicotinic receptor β4 subunit in the antidepressant activity of bupropion. Wild-type (β4+/+) and knockout (β4-/-) mice were intraperitoneally administered with normal saline (control) or bupropion (40mg/kg) daily for the first two weeks. Forced swim tests were performed on day 1 to determine the acute effect of bupropion at 0, 15, 30, 45, or 60min after the injection, and after two weeks of daily treatment to determine the chronic effects.

After Chile's health reform: increase in coverage and access, decline in hospitalization and death rates.

In 2005 the government of Chile passed comprehensive health reform. The law mandated coverage by public and private health insurers for selected medical interventions related to fifty-six priority diseases and conditions. This paper presents previously unpublished evidence on various consequences of the reform.

Controlling and eliminating neglected diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This paper analyzes the rationale for, and costs associated with, the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also estimates the magnitude of potential health gains. The results suggest that lymphatic filiariasis, onchocerciasis, and trachoma can be feasibly and affordably eliminated by 2020, at a total cost of US$128 million.
