Pediatric Acute Liver Failure as Presentation of Autoimmune Hepatitis: Learning from a Fatal Case.

Severe acute liver failure (SALF) is a rare condition in children. Up to 50% of the cryptogenic causes of SALF are associated with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). This report presents a 5-year-old girl with progressive jaundice for 10 days.

Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome: a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in cystic fibrosis.

Objective: To evaluate the demographics, genotype, and clinical presentation of pediatric patients presenting with distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS), and factors associated with DIOS recurrence.

Methods: Case series of ten patients (median age 13.2 years), followed-up in a reference center, retrospectively assessed.

Bariatric surgery: is it reasonable before the age of 16?

Objective:: to assess the severity of obesity in children and adolescents through the presence of comorbidities and the potential indication of bariatric surgery.

Methods:: we conducted a cross-sectional study with clinical and laboratory data of the first consultation of patients at the childhood obesity clinic at a tertiary hospital from 2005 to 2013. We divided the patients into groups with or without potential indication for surgery, and recorded age, gender, birth weight, age of obesity onset, BMI Z score, presence of acanthosis nigricans, blood pressure, total cholesterol and fractions, triglycerides, blood glucose and fasting insulin, HOMA1-IR, CRP and ESR.

Default mode, executive function, and language functional connectivity networks are compromised in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by mental and cognitive problems, particularly with memory, language, visuospatial skills (VS), and executive functions (EF). Advances in the neuroimaging of AD have highlighted dysfunctions in functional connectivity networks (FCNs), especially in the memory related default mode network (DMN). However, little is known about the integrity and clinical significance of FNCs that process other cognitive functions than memory.
