Using cucumber, maize, and ryegrass as model plants, the diversity and uniqueness of the molecular compositions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the structures of microbial communities in typical crop rhizosphere soils, as well as their associations, were investigated based on high-resolution mass spectrometry combined with high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the rhizosphere contained 2200 organic molecules that were not identified in the non-rhizosphere soils, as characterized by FT-ICR-MS. The rhizosphere DOM molecules generally contained more N, S, and P heteroatoms, stronger hydrophilicity, and more refractory organic matter, representing high and complex chemical diversity characteristics.

A series of benzofuran and benzo[]thiophen derivatives was synthesized via a transition-metal-free one-pot process at room temperature. This one-pot protocol enables the synthesis of compounds with high reaction efficiency, mild conditions, simple methods, and a wide-ranging substrate scope. Regioselective five-membered heterocycles were constructed in good-to-excellent yields.

An iodine-mediated one-pot synthesis of pyrrolo/indolo [1,2-]quinoxalines and quinazolin-4-one via utilizing epoxides as alkyl precursors under metal-free conditions has been described. Both 1-(2-aminophenyl)-pyrrole and 2-aminobenzamide could be applied to this protocol. A total of 33 desired products were obtained with moderate to good yields.

Dopamine molecules were oxidized and self-polymerized into nanofibers a template of lysozyme amyloid nanofibrils. The catechol groups adsorbed noble metal ions on the surface of the PDA nanofibers and reduced them into metallic nanoparticles with excellent catalytic activities. The past decades have seen a growing interest in natural products. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a flavonoid isolated from honeybee propolis, has shown multiple pharmacological potentials, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and protective effects on nervous systems and multiple organs, since it was found as a potent nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) inhibitor. This review summarizes the advances in these beneficial effects of CAPE, as well as the underlying mechanisms, and proposes that CAPE offers an opportunity for developing therapeutics in multiple diseases.

The phytotoxicities of TBECH diastereomers to plants at the biochemical and molecular levels were investigated in a hydroponic study by using maize as a model plant. The results showed that TBECH could induce the production of two species of reactive oxygen species (ROS), O and HO, in maize tissues. The accumulation of ROS was the highest when maize was exposed to β-TBECH.

Gold (Au) crystalline microwires with an unprecedented diameter of >500 nm and an aspect ratio >400 were synthesized using l-tyrosine as a reducing and capping agent. The Au microwires possessed high conductivity and electrocatalytic activities towards glucose and Hg(ii). Their large diameters and aspect ratios also offered maneuverability, and it was easy to produce Au microelectrodes.

The promyelocytic leukemia (PML)-retinoic acid receptor α (RARA) fusion is hypothesized to serve a vital role in the pathogenesis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), which results from a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 15 and 17, t(15;17)(q24;q21). A minority of APL cases lack the classical t(15;17) and have been identified to have cryptic or masked t(15;17) or complex translocations. The present study reports on a case of a 37-year-old male with APL harboring a complex three-way translocation t(1;17;15)(q21;q21;q24).

One-dimensional organic nanomaterials with a combination of electric conductivity, flexibility, and mechanical robustness are highly in demand in a variety of flexible electronic devices. Herein, conducting polymers were combined with robust Kevlar nanofibrils (aramid nanofibrils, abbreviated as ANFs) via in situ polymerization. Owing to the strong interactions between ANFs and conjugated polymers, the resultant core-shell ANFs showed high electric conductivity in combination with flexibility, robustness, physical stability, and endurance to bending and solvents, in sharp contrast to many inorganic conductive nanomaterials.
