Metabolic acidosis of chronic kidney disease and subclinical cardiovascular disease markers: Friend or foe?

The effect of chronic metabolic acidosis (MA) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the setting of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is largely unknown. Therefore, we aimed to study this relationship in nondialysis CKD patients.This cross-sectional, single-center study prospectively enrolled 95 clinically stable CKD patients (median age 61 (58, 65) years, 60% male, median eGFR 27 (22, 32) mL/min).

The effect of drug consultation center guidance on contraceptive use among women using isotretinoin: a randomized, controlled study.

Background: Women of reproductive age treated with isotretinoin are required to use two forms of contraceptives, yet adherence to the recommendations is limited. Our objective was to determine if an active intervention by a drug consultation center (DCC) will increase contraceptive use among women taking isotretinoin.

Methods: In a randomized, controlled study, women of reproductive age who called the DCC seeking advice regarding isotretinoin were randomly assigned to an intervention group (information by phone during initial interview, by mailed written form, and by text messages sent to their cellular phones) and a control group (information given once).

Fetal exposure to isotretinoin-an international problem.

Background: Isotretinoin is a known teratogen. Pregnancy prevention programs aimed at minimizing isotretinoin exposure in pregnancy have been implemented in North America with limited success.

Objective: To compare the management of fetal risk of isotretinoin in three countries, including information given to women, implementation of contraceptive methods, and pregnancy outcomes.
