Background & Aims: Observational epidemiologic studies have associated vitamin D deficiency with cholestasis. We reported previously that activation of the vitamin D/vitamin D receptor (VDR) axis in cholangiocytes mitigates cholestatic liver injury by remodeling the damaged bile duct. However, the function of VDR in hepatocytes during cholestasis remains unclear.

Here, we firstly introduce a detection system consisting of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and Au nanorods (AuNRs) for an ultrasensitive, rapid, quantitative and on-site detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) effect. Briefly, the UCNPs capture the S protein of lysed SARS-CoV-2 in the swabs and subsequently they are bound with the anti-S antibodies modified AuNRs, resulting in significant nonradiative transitions from UCNPs (donors) to AuNRs (acceptors) at 480 nm and 800 nm, respectively. Notably, the specific recognition and quantitation of S protein can be realized in minutes at 800 nm because of the low autofluorescence and high Yb-Tm energy transfer in upconversion process.

A novel ratiometric fluorescence probe was designed for the determination of Al by self-assembling of NH-MIL-101(Fe) and [Ru(bpy)]. Under the excitation wavelength of 360 nm, the NH-MIL-101(Fe)@[Ru(bpy)] presented a dual-emitting luminescent property at 440 and 605 nm, respectively. In the presence of Al, the blue fluorescence of NH-MIL-101(Fe)@[Ru(bpy)] at 440 nm was enhanced remarkably, while the red emission at 605 nm was almost not influenced.

Article Synopsis
  • Methamphetamine (METH) abuse has rapidly increased in recent years, leading to severe addiction and neurotoxicity, with no approved treatments currently available.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound from cannabis, shows promise in protecting against METH's harmful effects by counteracting neurotoxic mechanisms, though its exact action is still unclear.
  • Research indicates that CBD and METH may bind to the dopamine receptor D1 (DRD1), with CBD potentially blocking METH's damaging impacts on cell signaling and apoptosis, offering insight into a possible therapeutic strategy for METH use disorders.

The elaborate design of an ingenious hydrogel-assisted photothermal therapy (PTT) platform is a promising strategy for treating bacterial wound infections. Herein, a new generation of germanene nanocrystals (Ge NCs) with excellent photothermal performance are prepared via an ice-bath sonication liquid-phase exfoliation technique. Whereafter, by crosslinking interaction between chitosan and zinc acetate, as well as self-assembly property between Ge NCs and chitosan, we successfully construct an innovative germanene-modified chitosan antimicrobial hydrogel (CS/Ge NCs) integrating capture and killing bacteria performances.

High-fat diet (HFD) feeding rewires circadian rhythms of peripheral organs including the liver and adipose tissue. While the liver has been extensively studied, it remains largely unknown whether and how HFD organizes circadian biology in adipose tissue. Here, we took a systems approach to profile the diurnal transcriptome of adipose tissue in diet-induced obese mice either fed a low-fat diet (LFD) that reduces weight or still fed HFD.

Comparative gene identification-58 (CGI-58), also known as α/β hydrolase domain containing 5, is the co-activator of adipose triglyceride lipase that hydrolyzes triglycerides stored in the cytosolic lipid droplets. Mutations in CGI-58 gene cause Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome (CDS), an autosomal recessive neutral lipid storage disease with ichthyosis. The liver pathology of CDS manifests as steatosis and steatohepatitis, which currently has no effective treatments.

Chest X-ray (CXR) is commonly performed as an initial investigation in COVID-19, whose fast and accurate diagnosis is critical. Recently, deep learning has a great potential in detecting people who are suspected to be infected with COVID-19. However, deep learning resulting with black-box models, which often breaks down when forced to make predictions about data for which limited supervised information is available and lack inter-pretability, still is a major barrier for clinical integration.

Automatically and accurately annotating tumor in dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), which provides a noninvasive in vivo method to evaluate tumor vasculature architectures based on contrast accumulation and washout, is a crucial step in computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. However, it remains challenging due to the varying sizes, shapes, appearances and densities of tumors caused by the high heterogeneity of breast cancer, and the high dimensionality and ill-posed artifacts of DCE-MRI. In this paper, we propose a hybrid hemodynamic knowledge-powered and feature reconstruction-guided scheme that integrates pharmacokinetics prior and feature refinement to generate sufficiently adequate features in DCE-MRI for breast cancer segmentation.
