Non-consumer researchers collaborating with consumer researchers can benefit from greater relevance of research and improved congruence between research processes and health policy. As with all research collaborations, such partnerships are both constrained and facilitated by research ecosystems. However, it seems that collaborations with consumer researchers are impacted in particular ways by the research ecosystem.

This article reports one aspect of the results of a broader exploration, through a service user lens, of aspects of place that facilitate healing in mental health care, with a resulting conceptualisation of healing.
Method:: The research material comprised the author's historical writings of her experience of mental illness and recovery and in-depth individual interviews with 10 mental health service users.

What Is Known Of The Subject: Consumer participation in mental health services is an expectation articulated through mental health policy. Consumers as researchers could contribute significantly to mental health services. Barriers to participation are significant and limit consumer involvement.

A crucial development resulting from consumer involvement in mental health services has been engagement as active participants in mental health research, often conducted in collaboration with mental health researchers representing the health disciplines (referred to in this paper as 'other' researchers). Despite progress in mental health consumer research, unequal power relations continue to pose a major barrier. Although power issues are discussed in the literature, there is little research from the perspective of other mental health researchers who have collaborated with consumers on research projects.

A PWI map of Tmax is commonly used to identify tissue with critical hypoperfusion. A time to peak (TTP) map reflects similar hemodynamic properties with the added benefit that it does not require arterial input function (AIF) selection and deconvolution.

Aim: We hypothesized that patients with slowly expanding diffusion-weighted imaging lesions would have more penumbral salvage and better clinical outcomes following endovascular reperfusion than patients with rapidly expanding diffusion-weighted imaging lesions.
Methods: In the first part of this substudy of DEFUSE 2, growth curves were constructed for patients with >90% reperfusion and <10% reperfusion.
Background And Purpose: Prognostication tools that predict good outcome in patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusions after endovascular therapy are lacking. We aim to develop a tool that incorporates clinical and imaging data to predict outcomes after endovascular therapy.
Methods: In a derivation cohort of anterior circulation large vessel occlusion stroke patients treated with endovascular therapy within 8 hours from time last seen well (n=247), we performed logistic regression to identify independent predictors of good outcome (90-day modified Rankin Scale, 0-2).
Background And Purpose: The Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging Evaluation for Understanding Stroke Evolution 2 (DEFUSE 2) study has shown that clinical response to endovascular reperfusion differs between patients with and without perfusion-diffusion (perfusion-weighted imaging-diffusion-weighted imaging, PWI-DWI) mismatch: patients with mismatch have a favorable clinical response to reperfusion, whereas patients without mismatch do not. This study examined whether alternative mismatch criteria can also differentiate patients according to their response to reperfusion.
Methods: Patients from the DEFUSE 2 study were categorized according to vessel occlusion on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and DWI lesion volume criteria (MRA-DWI mismatch) and symptom severity and DWI criteria (clinical-DWI mismatch).
Background: Patients who have successful reperfusion following endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke have improved clinical outcomes. We sought to determine if the chance of successful reperfusion differs among hospitals, and if hospital site is an independent predictor of reperfusion.
Methods: Nine hospitals recruited patients in the Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging Evaluation for Understanding Stroke Evolution Study 2 (DEFUSE 2), a prospective cohort study of endovascular stroke treatment conducted between 2008 and 2011.
According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, an overall increase of entropy contributes to the driving force for any physicochemical process, but entropy has seldom been investigated in biological systems. Here, for the first time, we apply Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to investigate the Mg(2+)-induced spontaneous stacking of photosynthetic membranes isolated from spinach leaves. After subtracting a large endothermic interaction of MgCl₂ with membranes, unrelated to stacking, we demonstrate that the enthalpy change (heat change at constant pressure) is zero or marginally positive or negative.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Aims: The Houston Intra-Arterial Therapy score predicts poor functional outcome following endovascular treatment for acute ischemic stroke based on clinical variables. The present study sought to (a) create a predictive scoring system that included a neuroimaging variable and (b) determine if the scoring systems predict the clinical response to reperfusion.
Methods: Separate datasets were used to derive (n = 110 from the Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging Evaluation for Understanding Stroke Evolution 2 study) and validate (n = 125 from Massachusetts General Hospital) scoring systems that predict poor functional outcome, defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 4-6 at 90 days.
Background And Purpose: It is hypothesized that early diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions accurately estimate the size of the irreversibly injured core and thresholded perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) lesions (time to maximum of tissue residue function [Tmax] >6 seconds) approximate the volume of critically hypoperfused tissue. With incomplete reperfusion, the union of baseline DWI and posttreatment PWI is hypothesized to predict infarct volume.
Methods: This is a substudy of Diffusion and Perfusion Imaging Evaluation for Understanding Stroke Evolution Study 2 (DEFUSE 2); all patients with technically adequate MRI scans at 3 time points were included.

Photosynthetic membrane sacs (thylakoids) of plants form granal stacks interconnected by non-stacked thylakoids, thereby being able to fine-tune (i) photosynthesis, (ii) photoprotection and (iii) acclimation to the environment. Growth in low light leads to the formation of large grana, which sometimes contain as many as 160 thylakoids. The net surface charge of thylakoid membranes is negative, even in low-light-grown plants; so an attractive force is required to overcome the electrostatic repulsion.

We have mutagenised D263 to several selected amino acids (asparagine, alanine, serine, glutamate, and glutamine) to probe possible roles in facilitating proton movements within the active site and maintaining structural positioning of key active-site groups. The mutants have been characterized by kinetic methods and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to examine the effects of the substitutions on the stability of the folded state.

Unlabelled: Weddell seals undergo lung collapse during dives below 50 m depth. In order to explore the physiological mechanisms contributing to restoring lung volume and gas exchange after surfacing, we studied ventilatory parameters in three Weddell seals between dives from an isolated ice hole on McMurdo Sound, Antarctica.
Methods: Lung volumes and CO(2) elimination were investigated using a pneumotachograph, infrared gas analysis, and nitrogen washout.
In this paper we describe how photosystem II (PSII) from higher plants, which have been depleted, of the extrinsic proteins can be reconstituted with a chimeric fusion protein comprising thioredoxin from Escherichia coli and the manganese stabilising protein from Thermosynechococcus elongatus. Surprisingly, even though E. coli thioredoxin is completely unrelated to PSII, the fusion protein restores higher rates of activity upon rebinding to PSII than either the native spinach MSP, or T.

Background: Stigma associated with mental illness is frequently reported in the community but there is little published information about stigma within general hospitals.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the experience of stigma in patients and health professionals using a Liaison Psychiatry service in a general hospital.
Design: We used a grounded theory qualitative method to analyze audiotaped interviews of participants.
We report the combined use of steady-state fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate conformational distributions of the prion protein (PrP) repeat system. FRET was used for the first time to probe the distance, as a function of temperature and pH, between a donor Trp residue and an acceptor dansyl group attached to the N-terminus in seven model peptides containing one to three repeats of the second decarepeat of PrP from marsupial possum (PHPGGSNWGQ)nG, and one and two human PrP consensus octarepeats (PHGGGWGQ)nG. In multirepeat peptides, single-Trp mutants were made by replacing other Trp(s) with Phe.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe interaction of the second and third AT-hooks of HMGA1 (formerly HMGI/Y), which bind selectively in the minor groove of an AT-rich DNA sequence, was studied at different temperatures and ionic strengths by spectropolarimetry, spectrofluorimetry, isothermal titration calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The data show that binding of the ten amino acid core element of the two AT-hooks, which penetrates deep into the minor groove, is entropically driven: both the entropy and enthalpy of association of the peptides to the target DNA are positive up to 50 degrees C. The seven amino acid extension of the core in the second AT-hook, which extends out from the minor groove and loops over the phosphodiester backbone, adds a substantial negative enthalpic component into the binding of the 17 residue DBD2 peptide to DNA that corresponds in magnitude to the enthalpy of formation of two hydrogen bonds.
