[Usefulness of neuron specific enolase in patients with head and neck malignant tumors].

The authors present results of evaluation of neuron specific enolase (NSE) in 146 persons. We analyzed a concentration of NSE in preliminary study and in monitoring depending on clinical advances of tumour, mass of primary tumour and metastases to lymph nodes. Neuron specific enolase was excluded because the number of positive results was the same both in the main and control group.

[Ototoxic complications of chemotherapy].

Ototoxicity of drugs is still an important problem in the management of many disorders. Some issues of inner ear impairment following administration of antibiotics, cytostatics, salicylates and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs are presented in the article. Some of the clinical symptoms indicative to the possibility of complications in the inner ear: tinnitus, hearing loss, giddiness and vertigo.

[Alpha-fetoprotein--diagnostic utility in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck].

The authors present results of evaluation of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in 146 persons (108 patients with head and neck carcinoma and 38 healthy persons as control group). We analyzed a concentration of AFP in preliminary study and in monitoring depending on clinical advances of tumour, mass of primary tumour and metastases to lymph nodes. Our results indicate that evaluation of AFP have not high value in diagnostic procedures and monitoring patients with head and neck carcinoma.

[Lymph nodes metastases as a first sign of cancer].

The authors present three cases of cervical lymph nodes metastases from unknown primary lesion as a first and single sing of cancer. In follow-up the primary lesions of cancer was recognized (tonsil, hypopharynx, parotid gland). Presented patients pass through combined treatment: chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery with good results.

[Surgical treatment of rhinophyma using CO2 laser].

[Diagnostic value of osteotropic bone scintigraphy in maxillary sinus diseases].

The authors described the application of facial bone scintigraphy in 6 patients with acute and 47 patients with chronic sinusitis, 4 patients with cyst of maxillary sinus, 4 patients with sinus maxillary neoplasm and 4 patients with pyocele of frontal sinus. Facial bone scintigraphy was performed by gamma-camera Siemens Gammasonics ZLC-750 after intravenous administration of 15 mCi of 99mTcMDP in anteroposterior projection. The index of accumulation of the tracer (JAT) in maxillary sinus region was counted separately in men and in women in the reference group.

[The value of gastrointestinal antigens in the monitoring of patients with malignant head neoplasms].

The authors present the results of examinations of test on the sensitivity of biochemical tumor marker (Ca 19-9) in a group of 35 patients with head malignant tumors. The sensitivity (SE) of Ca 19-9 was 22.9% in preliminary study.

[Sarcoidosis of the paranasal sinuses].

The authors described diagnostics difficulties, clinical features and treatment of this disease. The treatment is insufficient, but only interventional, although the clinically dominating symptoms may be due to a chronic disease inside of the sinuses and they are known to be caused by specific disorders in immunology. Immunosuppression, using prednisone, and reestablishing sinus ventilation and drainage via natural ostia is the basis of treatment, but it does not lead to recovery.

[Pleomorphic adenoma of the parapharyngeal space: a case report].

The authors described a case of parapharyngeal space pleomorphic adenoma in a 22-year-old patient. The excision of the tumor through the mouth, without cutting up the jaw bone, turned out safe and radical.

[Gastrointestinal cancer antigen and immunoglobulins G, A, M in patients with head cancer].

The authors present the results of examinations of immunoglobulins A, G, M serum concentrations and of a sensitivity of test of biochemical tumor marker (Ca 19-9) in a group of 35 patients with head malignant tumors. There was a statistically significant increase of immunoglobulins IgA, IgG and decrease of immunoglobulin IgM. We observed statistical correlation between serum concentrations of IgA, IgG and serum concentrations of IgA, IgM.

[Use of long-acting drainage (sino-ject) in treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis].

The authors present the results of treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis with punctures and with permanent drainage (sino-ject). The use of permanent drainage shortened the time of treatment and increased percentage of very good results of treatment. Presented method of permanent drainage of maxillary sinus avoid many punctures of sinus.

[Use of "rinoflow" inhalation in treatment of paranasal sinusitis].

The inflammatory pathologies of the ENT tract are often characterized by presence of catarral, mucous-purulent and crusty secretions. In such cases, an efficient therapy has to change the dense secretions as first and then remove them. "Rinoflow" is a compressor-micronizer chamber system specially designed for treatment of affections of upper respiratory tract.

[Perennial specific immunotherapy in pollen allergy].

Authors present perennial immunotherapy procedure that they developed with sublingal Perosall T 13 and Novo-Helisen Depot. The results of two-year observation of 70 patients undergoing above mentioned therapy.

[The role of aeroallergens monitoring in the allergological practice].

A physician wanting to help his hay fever patient efficiently needs to know the causative agent in detail. High qualitative and quantitative variability in certain years creates the necessity of constant pollen count monitoring. Information on current trends is helpful to doctors in their diagnostic and prophylactic procedures as well as in efficient treatment planning.

[Endoscopic surgery of the sinus: own experiences].

In the Clinic of Otolaryngology Central Clinical Hospital Military School of Medicine in Warsaw in years 1992-1996 there were performed 187 endoscopic operations of nose and paranasal sinuses. Authors analised own material paying particular attention to indications, benefits and failures of these operations. Authors postulate that indications for clinical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of this technique should be considerably extended in diseases of nose and paranasal sinuses.

[Laser surgery and interferon in the treatment of laryngeal papilloma].

The laryngeal papilloma is very doubtful disease in children. The unknown etiology cause that there wasn't complete radical method in the treatment of laryngeal papilloma. Authors presented a case of 11 years old girl with recurrent laryngeal papilloma, who was treated twice with laser microsurgery without successful results.

[Concentration of pollen dust in the atmosphere of Poland].

The main allergic disorders of the upper airways are the airborne pollens of various plants. In order to determine the concentration of plant pollens in the atmosphere of Poland in the years 1989-1991 studies were carried out determining pollen counts in 21 locations throughout Poland. Four main periods of pollination were observed: 1) early spring (trees, shrubs); 2) late spring (trees); 3) early summer (grass, hay); 4) summer and early autumn (combined plants).

[Effect of histamine on behavior of the rosette test in patients with pollinosis].
