Emergency Colectomies in the Elderly Population-Perioperative Mortality Risk-Factors and Long-Term Outcomes.

Background: As the population ages emergency surgeries among the elderly population, including colonic resections, is also increasing. Data regarding the short- and long-term outcomes in this population is scarce.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed to investigate mortality and mortality risk factors associated with emergent colectomies in older compared to younger patients in a single university affiliated tertiary hospital.

Associations between SNPs within antioxidant genes and the risk of prostate cancer in the Siberian region of Russia.

In the present study we investigated the association of a number of polymorphic changes in antioxidant system genes (SNPs rs1050450 in the GPX1 gene, rs1695 and rs1138272 in the GSTP1 gene and rs4880 in the MnSOD gene) with the risk of prostate cancer. The association of disease stage and PSA levels with specific genotypes was also analyzed. A study was conducted with the participation of 736 Russian men.

Accelerating x-ray data collection using pyramid beam ray casting geometries.

Image reconstruction from its projections is a necessity in many applications such as medical (CT), security, inspection, and others. This paper extends the 2-D Fan-beam method in [2] to 3-D. The algorithm, called Pyramid Beam (PB), is based upon the parallel reconstruction algorithm in [1].
