As data on procalcitonin utility in antibiotics discontinuation [under an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP)] in patients with malignancies are lacking, we aimed to evaluate the utility of procalcitonin in an ASP in patients with malignancies. We conducted a retrospective review of the ASP database of all patients with malignancies in whom at least one procalcitonin level was taken and our ASP had recommended changes in carbapenem regimen, from January to December 2011. Whilst studies have shown that antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) can effectively reduce antibiotic utilisation, cost of care and even antimicrobial resistance rates, ASPs should avoid the perception that the goal is primarily to reduce antibiotic purchases and costs, instead of focusing on improving the quality of care. In addition, to address the concern of primary physicians who deemed that ASPs' choices of antibiotics were often inadequate, the impact of ASPs on patient safety should be monitored and evaluated. This paper presents results of in vivo studies on the effect of refractive index-matching media on image artifacts in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of human skin. These artifacts present as streaks of artificially low backscatter and displacement or distortion of features. They are primarily caused by refraction and scattering of the OCT light beam at the skin surface.

Terahertz antenna arrays supporting narrow lattice resonances are proposed as an alternative sensor-on-chip approach to liquid sensing. An array of metallic rectangular antennas fabricated on a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate is used to demonstrate the sensing of a number of fluids. Aim: The present study was aimed at investigating the effect of trans-6-(4-chlorobutyl)-5-hydroxy-4-(phenylthio)-1-tosyl-5,6-dihydropyridine-2(1H)-one (HTDP-2), a novel synthetic compound, on the release of endogenous glutamate in rat cerebrocortical nerve terminals (synaptosomes) and exploring the possible mechanism.

Methods: The release of glutamate was evoked by the K⁺ channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and measured by an on-line enzyme-coupled fluorimetric assay. We also used a membrane potential-sensitive dye to assay nerve terminal excitability and depolarization, and a Ca²⁺ indicator, Fura-2-acetoxymethyl ester, to monitor cytosolic Ca²⁺ concentrations ([Ca²⁺](c)).

Arrays of plasmonic pentamers consisting of five metallic nano-disks were designed and fabricated to achieve a pronounced Fano Resonance with polarization-independent far-field spectral response at normal incidence due to the structure symmetry of pentamers. A mass-spring coupled oscillator model was applied to study plasmon interactions among the nano-disks. It was found that the direction of the excitation light polarization can flexibly tune the spatial localization of near-field energy at sub-wavelength scales while the collective optical properties are kept constant.

Febrile neutropenia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients receiving chemotherapy. Major prophylactic strategies include granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and antibiotics, the most widely used of which are fluoroquinolones. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) of sequence type 398 (ST398) has frequently been detected in pigs and pig handlers. However, in Malaysia, sampling 360 pigs and 90 pig handlers from 30 farms identified novel ST9-spa type t4358-staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec type V MRSA strains that were found to transiently colonize more than 1% of pigs and 5.5% of pig handlers.

A new synthetic compound, 6-hydroxy-2-tosylisoquinolin-1(2H)-one (2-OH), was selected for immunopharmacological activity tests. The effects of 2-OH on human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) proliferation were determined by tritiated thymidine uptake. Compared to phytohemagglutinin (PHA; 5 microg/mL) stimulation, 2-OH significantly enhanced PBMC proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.

The association of optimal blood pressure (BP) control and arterial stiffness was evaluated in 172 patients with chronic kidney disease. The authors compared the augmentation index (AIx) of patients who achieved a recommended BP goal (<130/80 mm Hg) with those who did not (> or = 130/80 mm Hg).
