Lithium may be used as adjuvant therapy in schizophrenic patients and antipsychotics can be employed during the early phases of lithium therapy in patients with bipolar disorder. The issue of interactions between lithium and antipsychotics is therefore important. This study investigates the potential influence of repeated administration of amisulpride, an atypical antipsychotic, on the pharmacokinetics of lithium at steady state.

The pathway of methanol conversion by a thermophilic anaerobic consortium was elucidated by recording the fate of carbon in the presence and absence of bicarbonate and specific inhibitors. Results indicated that about 50% of methanol was directly converted to methane by the methylotrophic methanogens and 50% via the intermediates H(2)/CO(2) and acetate. The deprivation of inorganic carbon species [Sigma(HCO(3)(-)+CO(2))] in a phosphate-buffered system reduced the rate of methanol conversion.

The ensuing photochemical processes result in decomposition of (hydro)peroxides as assessed by photo-EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) and spin trapping. In argon-saturated apolar solutions and low MPc concentrations, alkoxyl free radicals (*OR) were identified as the primary products of (hydro)peroxide breakdown.

Phthalocyanine-based photosensitizers, coupled via a 17alpha-ethynyl group to estradiol using Pd(II) as a catalyst, were synthesized and evaluated for their estrogen receptor binding affinity and in vitro photocytotoxicity. The highest receptor binding affinities (RBA=8-13) were observed with lipophilic conjugates coupled via a relative long spacer group while the sulfonated analogues showed little binding affinities (RBA <2). The highest photocytotoxicity was observed with the sulfonated conjugates, the nature of the spacer group did not have a pronounced effect.

Kinetic parameters describing growth and decay of mesophilic (30 degrees C) and thermophilic (55 degrees C) aerobic biomass were determined in continuous and batch experiments by using oxygen uptake rate measurements. Biomass was cultivated on a single soluble substrate (acetate) in a mineral medium. The intrinsic maximum growth rate ( micro (max)) at 55 degrees C was 0.

A comparison was made between a regular UASB reactor and a UASB reactor continuously sparged with N(2) at a specific gas loading rate of 30 m(3)m(-2)d(-1).

The anaerobic pretreated paper process water contained a relatively high amount of slowly biodegradable components and few easily biodegradable components as indicated by the ratio of short-term BOD over the BOD5. Wastewater readily biodegradable COD, determined as short-term BOD, was almost similar when measured under both temperature conditions.

These copolymers were modified from previously-studied copolymers by incorporating an additional hydrophilic monomer, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) to decrease uptake by the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) and improve localization in tumors. VP lowered the phase transition pH of the copolymers but did not affect the onset of micellization.

Reaction of 7alpha-cyano-19-nortestosterone with copper(II)bromide in acetonitrile at room temperature results in aromatization of the A-ring. Treatment of 11beta-cyano-19-nortestosterone-17-one under similar condition does not induce A-ring aromatization but rather results in bromination at the 2beta-position.

Phthalocyanines (Pc) are attractive photosensitizers for PDT because of their enhanced photophysical and photochemical properties. The overall charge and solubility of Pc play a major role in their potential usefulness for PDT.

Closing the water cycles in this industry, therefore, promises large benefits for the environment and has the potential of huge cost savings for the industry. Closing the water cycle on the other hand also introduces problems with process water quality, quality of the end-product and scaling, owing to increased water contamination.

Experiments were performed to study the change in sludge characteristics and sludge granulation during the start-up of a thermophilic methanol-fed upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor. The laboratory scale reactor, was inoculated with thermophilic granular sludge and operated at 55 degrees C over 130 days at organic loading rates (OLR) varying from 2.7 to 47 gCOD.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA-ring fluorination of estradiol (ES) at position 2 or 4 decreases the rate of metabolism by blocking the formation of catechol estrogens, one of the major metabolic pathways of ES. We postulate that adding a 2- or 4-fluoro substituent to 16alpha-[18F]fluoroestradiol (FES), a positron emission tomography (PET) radiopharmaceutical used for estrogen receptor (ER) imaging, should prolong its blood circulation time, and thus, improve its localization in ER-rich target tissues. On such account, we prepared a series of FES derivatives substituted with a fluorine atom at C2 or C4, with or without an 11beta-OMe group, and we tested their binding affinities for the ER and different serum proteins including rat alphafetoprotein (AFP) and human sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

Research focussed on: (1) COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal, (2) effluent turbidity at both temperatures, (3) the origin of effluent colloidal material and (4) the possible role of protozoa on turbidity levels. Total COD removal percentages over the whole experimental period were 66+/-7% at 30 degrees C and 53+/-11% at 55 degrees C.

The use of activated sludge as a suitable thermophilic post-treatment system for anaerobically pre-treated paper process water from a paper mill using recycled wastepaper was studied. Two lab-scale plug flow activated sludge reactors were run in parallel for 6 months; a thermophilic reactor at 55 degrees C and a reference reactor at 30 degrees C.

To analyze the potential role of internalisation of the dye on photo-induced cytotoxicity, we compared two target antigens, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) that does not internalise and ErbB2 that does. Human ovarian carcinoma SKOv3 cells that express a high level of ErbB2 were transfected with the CEA cDNA.

The metabolism of desogestrel (13-ethyl-11-methylene-18,19-dinor-17alpha-pregn-4-en-20-yn-17-ol), a progestagen used in oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, was studied in vivo after a single oral administration of 150 microg [14C]-labeled desogestrel and 30 microg ethinylestradiol under steady state conditions to healthy postmenopausal women. After this oral administration, desogestrel was extensively metabolized. The dosed radioactivity was predominantly ( approximately 60%) excreted via urine, while about 35% was excreted via the feces.

The increasing scarcity of clean water sets the need for appropriate management of available water resources. Particularly regions suffering from a lack of water urgently need integrated environmental protection and resource conservation (EP and RC) technologies in order to enable effective management of the available water resources. EP and RC-concepts focus on pollution prevention and on a minimum of consumptive use of energy, chemicals, and water in pollution abatement and a maximum of re-use of treated wastewater, by-products and residues produced in the treatment of waste and wastewater.
