Splenectomy still remains the method of choice in treatment of patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) due to high efficiency and low percentage of complications. Five-year survival of patients with HCL after splenectomy was 74%. Because of the low percent of hairy cells in the patient's blood the diagnosis of HCL should widely include trephine biopsy of the bone marrow as well as immunological studies of the leukemic cells.
