 In an era when trabeculectomy surgeries in the United States are on the decline, ophthalmology residents may have limited opportunities to practice surgical techniques critical to success. However, key steps of trabeculectomy surgery can be introduced in a wet laboratory using a simple surgical model based on food items.  A fresh lime and chicken parts with skin, purchased from a grocery store, were utilized to practice trabeculectomy surgery.

Telemedicine vs Telephone Consultations and Medication Prescribing Errors Among Referring Physicians: A Cluster Randomized Crossover Trial.

Importance: Critically ill children presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in non-children's hospitals are at high risk for experiencing medical errors, including medication errors. Video telemedicine consultations with pediatric specialists have the potential to reduce the risk of medication errors beyond the current standard of care, telephone consultations.

Objective: To compare the rates of ED physician-related medication errors among critically ill children randomized to receive either video telemedicine or telephone consultations.

Teleophthalmology provides earlier eye care access for patients with newly-diagnosed diabetes.

Purpose: Timely diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is important in preventing vision loss. This study aims to determine if remote retinal imaging enables earlier eye care access among newly-diagnosed diabetic patients.

Telemedicine use for pediatric asthma care: a mixed methods study.

Objectives: To identify factors associated with telemedicine use for asthma care among children and young adults, and to describe the parent and patient experience of asthma care over telemedicine.

Methods: Our mixed methods study consisted of an electronic health record analysis and a qualitative focus group analysis. We analyzed records for all patients aged 2-24 seen at UC Davis Health between March 19, 2020 and September 30, 2020 for a primary diagnosis of asthma.

Introduction: Ureteric injury is a rare but serious, iatrogenic complication of hysterectomy. The risk depends on indication for surgery, predisposing risk factors, and peroperative conditions. Trends in Remote Retinal Imaging Utilization and Payments in the United States.

According to a national claims database, remote retinal imaging utilization in the U.S. increased rapidly from 2011 to 2020, but insurance coverage declined, with disproportionate impact on vulnerable populations including older, Black, and lower-income patients.

Transvaginal sonography determines accurately extent of infiltration of rectosigmoid deep endometriosis.

Objective: To investigate the agreement of measurements of the three diameters of rectosigmoid deep endometriosis (DE) lesions between presurgical evaluation using transvaginal sonography (TVS) and postsurgical specimen measurement (PSM).

Methods: This was a prospective observational multicenter study including symptomatic women undergoing surgical treatment for DE involving the rectosigmoid, by either discoid or segmental resection, from April 2017 to December 2019. TVS was performed presurgically to evaluate lesion size (craniocaudal-midsagittal length, anteroposterior thickness and transverse diameter), in accordance with the International Deep Endometriosis Analysis (IDEA) group consensus statement, and was compared with PSM.

Emergency Department Pediatric Readiness and Potentially Avoidable Transfers.

Objective: To determine the association between potentially avoidable transfers (PATs) and emergency department (ED) pediatric readiness scores and the score's associated components.

Study Design: This cross-sectional study linked the 2012 National Pediatric Readiness Project assessment with individual encounter data from California's statewide ED and inpatient databases during the years 2011-2013. A probabilistic linkage, followed by deterministic heuristics, linked pretransfer, and post-transfer encounters.

Changes in route of hysterectomy in Norway since introduction of robotic approach.

Introduction: From 2008, several Norwegian Health Trusts have acquired surgical robotic systems, and robotic hysterectomy accounted for 15 % of all hysterectomies performed in Norway in 2018. Robotic assisted hysterectomy is costly, and there is no evidence that the clinical outcome of robotic assisted hysterectomy is superior compared to the outcomes following other minimal invasive hysterectomies such as vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomies. The objectives of this study were to describe the implementation of robotic hysterectomy and changes in other hysterectomy approaches, such as open abdominal, laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy in hospitals with and without robotic systems for hysterectomy.

Association between emergency department pediatric readiness and transfer of noninjured children in small rural hospitals.

Purpose: Pediatric readiness scores may be a useful measure of a hospital's preparedness to care for children. However, there is limited evidence linking these scores with patient outcomes or other metrics, including the need for interfacility transfer. This study aims to determine the association of pediatric readiness scores with the odds of interfacility transfer among a cohort of noninjured children (< 18 years old) presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in small rural hospitals in the state of California.

Tapentadol versus oxycodone analgesia and side effects after laparoscopic hysterectomy: A randomised controlled trial.

Background: Tapentadol is an opioid, which acts as a μ-opioid receptor agonist and inhibits noradrenaline reuptake in the central nervous system. This dual mechanism of action results in synergistic analgesic effects and potentially less side effects. This has been shown in treatment of chronic pain but postoperative studies are sparse.

Transvaginal Sonographic Imaging and Associated Techniques for Diagnosis of Ovarian, Deep Endometriosis, and Adenomyosis: A Comprehensive Review.

Imaging of endometriosis and in particular deep endometriosis (DE) is crucial in the clinical management of women facing this debilitating condition. Transvaginal sonography (TVS) is the first-line imaging method and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may provide supplemental information. However, the delay in diagnosis of up to 10 years and more is of concern.

Background: Hysterectomy is a common gynaecological procedure. No Norwegian guidelines for the choice of hysterectomy surgical method exist, but international guidelines recommend minimally invasive surgery. Introduction: In Norway, all patient-reported claims for compensation are evaluated by The Norwegian System of Patient Injury Compensation (NPE). The number of claims from women with cervical cancer is rising, and the approval rate is high. Our aim was to study claims for compensation from women with cervical cancer to identify the type of failures, when, during the time-course of treatment, the medical failures occurred, and the consequences of the failures.

School-Based Telemedicine Interventions for Asthma: A Systematic Review.

Background: School health systems are increasingly investing in telemedicine platforms to address acute and chronic illnesses. Asthma, the most common chronic illness in childhood, is of particular interest given its high burden on school absenteeism.
