Decreasing early invasive mechanical ventilation exposure in preterm infants: a quality improvement initiative.

Objective: To decrease invasive mechanical ventilation exposure in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the first week of life for preterm infants with the global aim of decreasing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

Methods: We created a quality improvement (QI) initiative to optimize early non-invasive respiratory support which launched in August 2021. Patients born at <32 weeks gestation and admitted to the NICU on non-invasive respiratory support were included.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Cerebral Palsy in Children With Congenital Heart Disease Based on Risk of Surgical Mortality.

Background: Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) have a higher prevalence of motor impairment secondary to brain injury, resulting in cerebral palsy (CP). The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of CP in CHD in a single-center cohort, stratify risk based on surgical mortality using Society of Thoracic Surgeons-European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (STAT) categories and identify risk factors.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients registered in the University of Florida (UF) Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Surgery database from 2006 to 2017 with a diagnosis of CHD who continued follow-up for more than two years at UF.

Introduction: The American Heart Association Life's Simple 7 schema can be used to categorize patients' cardiovascular health status as poor, intermediate, or ideal on the basis of smoking, BMI, physical activity, dietary patterns, blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting blood sugar. This study examined the association between cardiovascular health status and subsequent healthcare utilization.

Methods: This was an observational cohort study of adults from an integrated healthcare delivery system-Kaiser Permanente Northern California-that had outpatient care between 2013 and 2014.

Serious life events and associated PTSD in Gambian girls exposed to female genital cutting.

Introduction: Poor mental health, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has been reported after female genital cutting (FGC). However, data documenting adverse consequences of FGC have insufficiently considered confounding factors, such as other traumatising events. Here, we examined the extent to which FGC versus other serious life events disturbed Gambian girls subjected to FGC.

Background: Female genital cutting (FGC) may cause a series of health problems that require specialized healthcare. General practitioners (GPs) are gatekeepers to specialized healthcare services in Norway. To refer girls and women subjected to FGC to appropriate services, GPs need to assess whether the health problems reported by these patients are related to FGC.

Religion, Health, and Life Satisfaction Among Somali and Gambian Women in Norway.

This article describes and analyses the religious justifications for the life satisfaction reported by two groups of Muslim women. Approximately, twenty Somali women and twenty Gambian women, living in Norway, who had experienced trauma and pain due to female genital mutilation/cutting as well as other traumas and hardships, were interviewed. While the Somali women adhere to conservative Islam and try to cope with their life through endurance and patience, the Gambians belong to a Sufi tradition and verbalise their dissatisfaction in order to receive help from Sufi saints.

Building a strong foundation from the ground up: the impact of a medical student substance use disorder organization on curriculum and community.

Due to the increasing rates of substance use disorders (SUDs), accidental overdoses, and associated high mortality rates, there is an urgent need for well-trained physicians who can grasp these complex issues and help struggling patients. Preparing these physicians occurs through targeted education and clinical exposure in conjunction with medical school curricula in the field of addiction medicine. Medical students can often feel overwhelmed by the medical school curriculum and changes to the curriculum take time, money, and administrative commitment to ratify.

Screening for depression in patients in treatment for alcohol use disorder using the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-10.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are prevalent disorders that often co-occur. The aim of the study was to investigate how the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-10) perform as screening instruments for MDD in AUD patients in treatment. The study included 127 mainly AUD inpatients currently in treatment at rehabilitation clinics in Norway.

Potential Role of S-Palmitoylation in Cancer Stem Cells of Lung Adenocarcinoma.

S-palmitoylation, catalyzed by a family of 23 zinc finger Asp-His-His-Cys (DHHC) domain-containing (ZDHHC) protein acyltransferases localized on the cell membrane. However, stemness genes modulated by ZDHHCs in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remain to be defined. Previously, we have constructed a network of cancer stem cell genes, including INCENP, based on mRNA stemness indices (mRNAsi) of LUAD.

Health workers and Sub Saharan African women's understanding of equal access to healthcare in Norway.

This article describes and analyzes conceptions of equal access to healthcare by health workers and Sub Saharan African women living in Norway. The main objective of the study was to find out if there is equal access to healthcare as understood by both the provider and receiver side of healthcare. The two sides have different positions from where to observe and judge the services given, which can give a broader understanding of the healthcare system.

Placental Transfusion, Timing of Plastic Wrap or Bag Placement, and Preterm Neonates.

Objective: Compare delivery room practices and outcomes of infants born at less than 32 weeks' gestation or less than 1,500 g who have plastic wrap/bag placement simultaneously during placental transfusion to those receiving plastic wrap/bag placement sequentially following placental transfusion.

Study Design: Retrospective analysis of data from a multisite quality improvement initiative to refine stabilization procedures pertaining to placental transfusion and thermoregulation using a plastic wrap/bag. Delivery room practices and outcome data in 590 total cases receiving placental transfusion were controlled for propensity score matching and hospital of birth.

Background: Female genital cutting (FGC) involve an acute physical trauma that hold a potential risk for immediate and long-term complications and mental health problems. The aim of this study was to examine the prediction of depressive symptoms and psychological distress by the immediate and current physical complications following FGC. Further, to examine whether the age at which 12-year-old Gambian girls had undergone the procedure affected mental health outcomes.

Eight-hour medication-assisted treatment waiver training for opioid use disorder: integration into medical school curriculum.

: The opioid epidemic is a growing problem in the USA. Use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) has been effective in treating patients with opioid use disorders (OUD) and maintaining sobriety; however, there is a significant shortage of physicians formally trained in MAT. : Wayne State University School of Medicine integrated the 8-hour MAT waiver training into its Internal Medicine clerkship curriculum.

A system analysis of the mental health services in Norway and its availability to women with female genital mutilation.

Background: This article explores mental health services in Norway and their availability for women subjected to female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). The article focus on the system of communication and referrals from the perspective of health workers, and aims to identify bottlenecks in the system, what and where they are to be found, and analyze how different mental health services deal with Sub Saharan African (SSA) women in general, but in particular with respect to FGM/C.

Method: The study was conducted in Oslo, Norway, using a qualitative fieldwork research design, with the use of purposeful sampling, and a semi-structural guideline.

Neuroimaging in infants with prenatal opioid exposure: Current evidence, recent developments and targets for future research.

Prenatal opioid exposure (POE) has shown to be a risk factor for adverse long-term cognitive and behavioral outcomes in offspring. However, the neural mechanisms of these outcomes remain poorly understood. While preclinical and human studies suggest that these outcomes may be due to opioid-mediated changes in the fetal and early postnatal brain, other maternal, social, and environmental factors are also shown to play a role.

Sexual norms and the intention to use healthcare services related to female genital cutting: A qualitative study among Somali and Sudanese women in Norway.

Background: Female Genital Cutting (FGC) is a traditionally meaningful practice in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It is associated with a high risk of long-term physical and psychosexual health problems. Girls and women with FGC-related health problems need specialized healthcare services such as psychosexual counseling, deinfibulation, and clitoral reconstruction.

Loss of EGR-1 uncouples compensatory responses of pancreatic β cells.

: Subjects unable to sustain β-cell compensation develop type 2 diabetes. Early growth response-1 protein (EGR-1), implicated in the regulation of cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis, is induced by diverse metabolic challenges, such as glucose or other nutrients. Therefore, we hypothesized that deficiency of EGR-1 might influence β-cell compensation in response to metabolic overload.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs), characterized by self-renewal and unlimited proliferation, lead to therapeutic resistance in lung cancer. In this study, we aimed to investigate the expressions of stem cell-related genes in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). The stemness index based on mRNA expression (mRNAsi) was utilized to analyze LUAD cases in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

Measuring Personality Problems in Patients With Substance Use Disorders: A Cross-Sample Validation.

Co-occurrence of substance use disorder and personality disorder (PD) is associated with greater functional impairment and mutual deterioration of the prognosis. More information is needed about the extent of personality problems in substance use disorder patients and when these problems can be assessed in a reliable way. The aim of this study was to compare the levels and scale reliability of (mal)adaptive personality functioning in four different samples and to discuss the possible clinical implications.
