Factors associated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation failure in patients with hematological neoplasia and their association with outcomes.

Background: The usefulness of non-invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) in oncohematological patients is still a matter of debate.

Aim: To analyze the rate of noninvasive ventilation failure and the main characteristics associated with this endpoint in oncohematological patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF)

Methods: A ventilatory support protocol was developed and implemented before the onset of the study. According to the PaO/FiO (P/F) ratio and clinical judgment, patients received supplementary oxygen therapy, NIMV, or invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

Lung ultrasound is useful in oncohematologic patients with respiratory dysfunction admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU): a pilot study.

Aims: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of a sequential lung ultrasound score (LUS) in immunosuppressed patients with oncohematologic diseases and acute respiratory dysfunction hospitalized in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Materials And Methods: LUS was calculated at ICU admission, after 24 h, 48 h and at discharge. A score ranging from 0 to 26 was attributed according to the number of B lines, presence of lung consolidation and pleural effusion.

Use of handgrip dynamometry for diagnosis and prognosis assessment of intensive care unit acquired weakness: A prospective study.

Objectives: To test the agreement between handgrip dynamometry and Medical Research Council (MRC) criteria for the diagnosis of intensive care unit acquired weakness (ICUAW) and to evaluate if dynamometry findings are associated with morbidity and mortality.

Methods: A prospective single center cohort study was conducted in a Brazilian ICU. Adults requiring at least 5 days of critical care were included.

Subgingival Irrigation with a Solution of 20% Propolis Extract as an Adjunct to Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment: A Preliminary Study.

Natural products, including propolis, are now frequently used to treat periodontal disease, but there are a few clinical studies in this area. The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of subgingival irrigation of periodontal pockets with a hydroalcoholic solution of propolis extract 20% (w/v) as an adjunct to periodontal therapy. Sixteen individuals were divided into a test group (TG), comprised 65 teeth (scaling and root planing + irrigation with propolis solution), and a control group (CG), comprised 62 teeth (scaling and root planing + irrigation with saline solution).

Rapid detection of the New Delhi metallo-b-lactamase 1 (NDM-1) gene by loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP).

Background: New Delhi Metallo-b-lactamase (NDM-1) is an enzyme emerging around the world conferring resistance to a wide range of β-lactams agents and whose early detection is extremely important. We proposed to standardize the detection of the bla gene using the LOOP-mediated isothermal amplification technique (LAMP).

Methods: In all, 14 Gram-negative bacterial strains isolated from patients presenting pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation were used for the bla standardization by LAMP.

Main characteristics observed in patients with hematologic diseases admitted to an intensive care unit of a Brazilian university hospital.

Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with hematological disease admitted to the intensive care unit and the use of noninvasive mechanical ventilation in a subgroup with respiratory dysfunction.

Methods: A retrospective observational study from September 2011 to January 2014.

Results: Overall, 157 patients were included.
