Background: Suboptimal cardiovascular health (CVH) in pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and offspring outcomes. To guide public health efforts to reduce disparities in maternal CVH, we determined the contribution of individual- and neighborhood-level factors to racial and ethnic differences in early pregnancy CVH.

Methods: We included nulliparous individuals with singleton pregnancies who self-identified as Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black (NHB), or non-Hispanic White (NHW) and participated in the nuMoM2b cohort study (Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be).

Article Synopsis
  • More women are facing a serious pregnancy issue called placenta accreta spectrum, where the placenta sticks too closely to the uterus, leading to health risks for moms.
  • To help treat this issue effectively, hospitals need a team of different medical experts, like surgeons, doctors who specialize in babies, and mental health professionals.
  • The article aims to create a plan to ensure these teams are prepared with the right tools and guidelines to care for these patients before, during, and after childbirth.

Complete uterine avulsion is an extremely rare complication of trauma sustained during pregnancy. We present the case of a 21-year-old nullipara at 16 weeks' gestation who was involved in a high-speed motor vehicle collision with subsequent fetal demise. Initially she was hemodynamically stable and demonstrated small amounts of intraabdominal free fluid, therefore multidisciplinary conservative measures were undertaken.

Background And Objectives: Low anterior rectosigmoid resection for a gynecologic disease is usually performed in concert with other procedures and can result in significant morbidity should anastomotic complication occur. This study examined surgical outcomes of side-to-end reanastomosis after low anterior resection (STELAR) performed by gynecologic oncology service.

Methods: This is a case series examining consecutive patients who underwent STELAR for gynecologic indications by a single gynecologic oncology group from 2009 to 2018.

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) encompasses a range of disorders of placental trophoblastic tissue that is morbidly adherent to the underlying gravid uterus. Women with PAS commonly undergo surgical treatment with hysterectomy at cesarean delivery that is associated with significant surgical morbidity and mortality. Increased vascularity due to gestational change and the abnormally enlarged lower uterine segment due to the location of placenta make the surgery complex and morbid.

Objective: A global pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has created unique challenges to providing timely care for cancer patients. In early-stage cervical cancer, postponing hysterectomy for 6-8 weeks is suggested as a possible option in the Covid-19 burdened hospitals. Yet, literature examining the impact of surgery wait-time on survival in early-stage cervical cancer remains scarce.

The use of low-cost inorganic sorbents as a new sustainable strategy to enhance the valorization of nutrients (N-P-K), from the urban water cycle (e.g., side streams from sewage sludge anaerobic digestion), in agriculture applications is presented.

To have non-zero net flow in AC electroosmotic pumps, the electroosmosis (EO) has to be non-linear and asymmetric. This can be achieved due to ionic concentration polarization. This is known to occur close to micro-/nano-interfaces provided that the sizes of the nanopores are not too large compared to the Debye screening length.

The integration of up-concentration processes to increase the efficiency of primary sedimentation, as a solution to achieve energy neutral wastewater treatment plants, requires further post-treatment due to the missing ammonium removal stage. This study evaluated the use of zeolites as a post-treatment step, an alternative to the biological removal process. A natural granular clinoptilolite zeolite was evaluated as a sorbent media to remove low levels (up to 100mg-N/L) of ammonium from treated wastewater using batch and fixed bed columns.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) is a novel therapy for neuropsychiatric disorders. Hypomania is a known complication of VC/VS DBS, but who is at risk is less understood. Factors such as family history, combined with details of DBS programming, might quantify that risk.

The small GTPase Rap1 affects cell adhesion and cell motility in numerous developmental contexts. Loss of Rap1 in the Drosophila wing epithelium disrupts adherens junction localization, causing mutant cells to disperse, and dramatically alters epithelial cell shape. While the adhesive consequences of Rap1 inactivation have been well described in this system, the effects on cell signaling, cell fate specification, and tissue differentiation are not known.
