The morphology and antigenic properties of 34 phages of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus strains isolated from Black Sea water, as well as their range of lytic activity and specificity of action, have been studied. Most of these phages have been found to lyze both V.

For the first time V. fluvialis strains were detected on the territory of the USSR. The taxonomic position of these vibrios was determined by their nucleotide DNA composition (the content of guanine + cytosine was 49.

The epidemiological and clinical features of alimentary toxinfections caused by halophilic vibrios on the Crimean coast of the Sea of Azov at the period of 1976-1984 were studied. Toxinfections were linked mainly with the use of sea-food subjected to different kinds of culinary treatment and took the course of gastroenteritis. To prevent toxinfections caused by halophilic vibrios, the technology, as well as sanitary and hygienic norms, should be strictly observed in the production of sea-food; besides, special methods of bacteriological diagnosis should be introduced into practice at laboratories of medical institutions and fish-processing plants.

The study of hemolysin activity, hemolysin-destructive factor (HDF) activity and cholerogenicity in 143 Vibrio eltor strains has revealed the existance of close relationship between cholerogenicity and hemolysin production, as well as between cholerogenicity and HDF activity. The negative character of conjugation between the HDF activity and the hemolytic activity of the strains under study has been established, which allows one to suggest the possibility of the regulating action of hemolysin on the synthesis of HDF (enterotoxin).

The data contained in the works of some foreign authors who have reconsidered the taxonomic position of V. metschnikovii are analyzed. In contrast to the views expressed by Gamaleya whi believed this microorganism to be the modified cholera vibrio, the foreign authors identify it with the "Kommabacillus der Cholera nostras" described by Finkler and Prior (1884) and classify it with saprophytes widely spread in the environment.

During the period of 4 years 558 halophil vibrio strains (258 V. parahaemolyticus strains and 300 V. angiolyticus strains) were isolated from the water and from the representatives of the hydrobios of the Black Sea.

Higher stability of resistance to tetracycline in the polyresistant strain of V. eltor under conditions of macroorganism as compared to nutrient media was found experimentally. To increase isolation of the resistant forms of the cholera vibrio it was recommended to use agar with tetracycline or other antibiotics depending on the particular case in addition to the routine media.

Galophilic vibrios were for the first time in the Soviet Union isolated from the patients with gastrointestinal diseases in Novorossiisk during the summer-autumn period of 1973. The greatest number of strains of the parahemolytic vibrios was isolated in August and September, during intensive fishing season, from the patients in whom the disease usually developed 6 to 12 hours after eating the sea fish. The parahemolytic vibrios isolated from the patients were typical by all signs and produced a marked hemolysis on the Wagatsuma medium.
