Research Question: What is the experience and mid- and long-term andrological health follow-up of (pre)pubertal males who have undergone testicular tissue freezing (TTF)?

Design: This single-centre longitudinal retrospective cohort study reports on the mid- and long-term andrological health follow-up of (pre)pubertal males and young adults who underwent TTF for fertility preservation between January 2007 and December 2018. Medical characteristics and questionnaire data collected more than 18 months after TTF were analysed.

Results: Thirty-six patients were revisited during a medical follow-up consultation.

Background: There is little consensus on how to make a diagnosis announcement of severe chronic disease in neurology. Other medical specialties, such as oncology, have developed assessment methods similar to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to address this issue. Here we report the implementation of an OSCE focused on the diagnosis announcement of chronic disease in neurology by residents.

Article Synopsis
  • * Findings suggest that vincristine, especially when paired with alkylating agents, negatively impacts spermatogonia levels, whereas carboplatin alone does not affect their quantity.
  • * The research emphasizes the importance of fertility preservation methods, such as testicular tissue freezing (TTF), for young cancer patients, noting that chemotherapy generally reduces spermatogonia presence post-treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Long gap esophageal atresia (EA) presents significant challenges for pediatric surgeons compared to non-long gap EA/tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF), particularly in terms of patient outcomes at ages 1 and 6.
  • A study analyzed data from patients who underwent EA surgery in France, finding that those with long gap EA experienced more complications, longer hospital stays, and increased reliance on parenteral nutrition during the first year of life.
  • At the 6-year mark, patients with long gap EA had more digestive issues, although they showed less spine deformation, with no major differences in outcomes between initial treatment approaches of delayed primary anastomosis or esophageal replacement.

Background: Testicular tissue freezing is proposed for fertility preservation to (pre)pubertal boys with cancer before highly gonadotoxic treatment. Studies accurately comparing human (pre)pubertal testicular tissue quality before freezing and after thawing are exceptional. No study has reported this approach in a systematic manner and routine care.

Article Synopsis
  • Megacystis-microcolon-intestinal-hypoperistalsis syndrome (MMIHS) is a rare genetic disorder causing severe abdominal swelling, a small colon, and reduced movement in the intestines, often linked to mutations in the ACTG2 gene.
  • Recent findings have also identified additional mutations in other genes such as MYH11, MYLK, and a potential new gene PDCL3 that may be involved in the condition.
  • Research on five patients revealed multiple genetic variants, including a complete absence of PDCL3 expression in affected individuals, suggesting it plays an important role in the disorder due to its involvement in smooth muscle contractility.

Background: Diffusion-weighted imaging plays a key role in the imaging of acute pyelonephritis by MRI. However the use of respiratory triggering is challenging and time-consuming in children. Diffusion tensor imaging without respiratory triggering might provide satisfying images of the moving kidneys.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of intradetrusor injections of botulinum toxin type A (IDBTX-A) in children with spina bifida.

Methods: All patients aged less than 16 years old who underwent IDBTX-A between 2002 and 2016 at 6 institutions were included in a retrospective study. Our primary endpoint was the success rate of IDBTX-A defined as both clinical improvement (no incontinence episodes between clean intermittent catheterizations [CICs], absence of urgency, and less than 8 CICs per day) and urodynamic improvement (resolution of detrusor overactivity and normal bladder compliance for age) lasting ≥12 weeks.

The kidney performs multiple functions. Glomerular filtration is the most studied of these functions. In clinical practice, the surgical indication for patients with unilateral uropathy is frequently based on the split renal function as demonstrated by scintigraphy.

MR urography (MRU) has been widely accepted as a substitute to intravenous urography for investigating children with a dilated urinary tract after preliminary assessment by US and voiding cystourethrography. Hydronephrosis is by far the main indication for MRU because upper tract dilatation is a frequent condition in infants and children. Recent advances in technology have allowed MR to go beyond morphology and to assess renal function parameters such as split renal function and drainage.

Thymomas are tumours that rarely occur in children, are almost invariably benign, and are usually discovered incidentally in the anterior mediastinum on chest X-rays. Whereas in adults these tumours are often associated with myasthenia gravis and other autoimmune diseases, this occurrence is very rare in the paediatric population. Multiple localisation and/or extra-thoracic recurrence of thymomas in children also appears to be exceptional with no reported cases in the English literature.

We perform a modified Duplay procedure in our department without incision of the urethral plate for correction of distal hypospadias. The objective of this retrospective study was to analyse the long-term functional and aesthetic results of this technique. Strictures are a frequent complication of hypospadias surgery, but their frequency is often underestimated as they can remain asymptomatic.
