Although elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure, it can become challenging due to multiple variants of the anatomy of both cystic artery and cystic bile duct. A 52-year-old male with a history of symptomatic cholelithiasis underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. During preparation of the Calot's triangle in order to achieve the "critical view of safety", an uncommon variation of the arterial anatomy was detected.

Duration Perception and Reading in Typically Developing Adults and Adults with Developmental Dyslexia: Implications for Assessment and Intervention.

While the link between beat perception and reading skills is attributed to a general improvement in neural entrainment to speech units, duration perception (DP) is primarily linked to a specific aspect of speech perception, specifially discriminating phonemes of varying lengths. Our previous study found a significant correlation between DP and pseudoword reading in both typically developing (TD) individuals and adults with dyslexia (DD). This suggests that, like beat, DP may also enhance overall speech perception.

[Oncology: what's new in 2023].

The oncology field continues its remarkable evolution over the years, with promising advances leading to innovative and individualized treatments. The development of new molecules, the identification of new therapeutic targets and the search for new sequences or combinations promise to revolutionize cancer treatments and contribute to improving survival rates, patients' quality of life and to open new perspective in oncology research. In this article, the newest data released in 2023 are reviewed.

Dual first-line maintenance by PARP inhibitor and bevacizumab can cause confusion in high-grade serous ovarian cancer: A case of PRES and a review of the literature.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a rare neurological disorder, the diagnosis of which is based on the combination of clinical and radiological findings. It can be associated with many patient-related conditions such as autoimmune disorders or can be provoked by toxins or medication. We report the case of a 70-year-old patient, known for International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IVB, high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, who was diagnosed with a posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome while on bevacizumab and olaparib maintenance treatment.

Covalently Modified MoS Bearing a Hamilton-Type Receptor for Recognizing a Redox-Active Ferrocene-Barbiturate Guest via Multiple H-Bonds.

The covalent modification of the metallic phase of MoS with a Hamilton-type ligand is presented, transforming MoS to a recognition platform which is able to embrace barbiturate moieties via hydrogen bonding. The successful hydrogen bonding formation is easily monitored by simple electrochemical assessments, if a ferrocene-labeled barbiturate analogue is utilized as a proof of concept. Full spectroscopic, thermal, and electron microscopy imaging characterization is provided for the newly formed recognition system, along with valuable insights concerning the electrochemical sensing.

[Endometrial cancer in the crossroads of modernity and immunotherapy].

Frequent and with an increasing incidence in some territories, endometrial cancer is a complex disease leading to significant morbidity among affected patients. After years of research and the implementation of state-of-the-art molecular and gene assays significant breakthroughs were made. Through a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of uterine carcinogenesis, a more precise and personalized risk stratification and the incorporation of immunotherapy, the treatment of endometrial cancer is experiencing significant improvements.

Lymph Node Involvement in Recurrent Serous Borderline Ovarian Tumors: Current Evidence, Controversies, and a Review of the Literature.

Borderline ovarian tumors (BOTs) account for 10-20% of epithelial ovarian neoplasms. They are characterized by their lack of destructive stromal invasion. In comparison to invasive ovarian cancers, BOTs occur in younger patients and have better outcome.

So-Called Serous Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix with Mutation: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Serous carcinoma of the uterine cervix (SCUC) is now believed to be a morphological variant of an HPV-associated endocervical adenocarcinoma or a metastasis from a serous carcinoma of the upper tract. In terms of mutational status as detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS), this controversial entity has not been characterized yet. We describe the case of a patient with a carcinoma categorized as stage IVB SCUC, initially treated with carboplatin, paclitaxel, and bevacizumab, followed by maintenance with bevacizumab.

VEGFR Inhibitors for Uterine Metastatic Perivascular Epithelioid Tumors (PEComa) Resistant to mTOR Inhibitors. A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare neoplasms. PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway upregulation is critical for their pathogenesis and is often associated with TSC1/TSC2 inactivation. Although first line mTOR inhibitors are an effective treatment, metastatic PEComas eventually progress.

Temporal Changes of Low Anterior Resection Syndrome Score after Sphincter Preservation: A Prospective Cohort Study on Repetitive Assessment of Rectal Cancer Patients.

There is a relative shortage of studies directly addressing the postoperative rectal cancer patients' evacuatory dysfunction, as estimated by the low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) score at repeated assessment time-points. The aim of the present study was to prospectively evaluate the incidence of LARS at predefined time intervals during the first 3 years after sphincter preserving rectal cancer surgery and to enlighten the effect of identified risk factors. Seventy-eight patients, who remained alive and recurrence-free 2 years after (ultra-) low anterior resection were prospectively assessed at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months postoperatively, using the LARS score as bowel dysfunction outcome measure.

Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Ataxia Can Affect Prognosis in High-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer: A Case Report.

The reported case is a 61-year-old woman, admitted for gradual onset of gait disturbances and dysphonia. The serum immunological panel revealed anti-Yo autoantibodies, suggestive of a paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS). A PET-CT revealed a suspicious left ovarian mass with retroperitoneal nodal involvement, and the histological assessment of surgical samples confirmed a FIGO IIIC high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC).

Validation and comparative assessment of low anterior resection syndrome questionnaires in Greek rectal cancer patients.

Background: Our study validated the low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) score questionnaire, the colorectal functional outcome (COREFO) questionnaire, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center bowel function instrument (MSKCC-BFI) in Greek rectal cancer patients.

Methods: Internal consistency, repeatability, construct and discriminant validity were evaluated for LARS, COREFO, and MSKCC-BFI questionnaires. The convergent validity was assessed by correlations with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and QLQ-CR29 domains.

Use of a biological mesh for the treatment of perineal fistula following radical colorectal resection.

Patients with postradiation therapy for malignancies and/or extensive colorectal surgery are prone to the development of enteroperineal fistulas. Application of biological meshes may prove beneficial in treating complicated enteroperineal fistulas as they provide a stable ground for closing pelvic defects even in contaminated fields.

Bowel perforation by lumbar-peritoneal (LP) shunt: A rare complication of neurosurgery.

Introduction: Lumbar-peritoneal (LP) and ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt placement is the treatment of choice for diversion of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the subarachnoid space into the peritoneal cavity. This invasive procedure has been associated with several complications, most commonly infection and obstruction. Perforation of the bowel is an extremely rare complication.

[Selective therapeutic de-escalation in early stage breast cancer].

The survival of patients with breast cancer has improved considerably thanks to adjuvant radiotherapy and systemic treatments. Due to the potential adverse events associated with these treatments, a de-escalation effort was undertaken concerning surgery and more recently the adjuvant treatments. Conservative breast surgery and the avoidance of axillary dissection were possible for the majority of the patients without detrimental effect on survival.

[Sjögren's syndrome: when to suspect and how to confirm?].

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease leading to mucosal dryness. It may also involve joints, nerves, kidneys and lungs. Patients with SS are also at increased risk for lymphoma.

Changes in nasal resonance following septoplasty in adults: Acoustic and perceptual characteristics.

Objectives: Patients undergoing surgery for a deviated nasal septum (septoplasty) often report that their voice sounds different or less hyponasal. However, such a relationship between septoplasty and vocal resonance remains without scientific evidence. The purpose of this work is to investigate whether nasal septal surgery has any effect on nasal resonance, both in terms of objective measurements and patient perception.

KISS1/KISS1R expression in eutopic and ectopic endometrium of women suffering from endometriosis.

Background: The KISS1/KISS1R system has been implicated in the physiology of reproduction and many studies have documented the stimulatory effect of kisspeptin on Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropin secretion. In addition, the KISS1/KISS1R system has been implicated in several pathophysiological processes, including cancer.

Materials And Methods: We examined the pattern of KISS1 and KISS1R expression in eutopic and ectopic endometrium tissues which were obtained from 24 women suffering from endometriosis and 16 control women who underwent laparoscopic excision for other benign gynecological diseases.

Insulinlike growth factor-1Ec (MGF) expression in eutopic and ectopic endometrium: characterization of the MGF E-peptide actions in vitro.

The transcription of the insulinlike growth factor 1 (igf-1) gene generates three mRNA isoforms, namely IGF-1Ea, IGF-1Eb and IGF-1Ec (or MGF [mechano growth factor]). Herein, we analyzed the expression of IGF-1 isoforms in eutopic and ectopic endometrium (red lesions and endometriotic cysts) of women with endometriosis, and we characterized the actions of a synthetic MGF E-peptide on KLE cells. Our data documented that all three igf-1 gene transcripts are expressed in the stromal cells of the eutopic and ectopic endometrium; however, endometriotic cysts contained significantly lower IGF-1 isoform expression, both at the mRNA and protein level, as was shown using semiquantitative PCR and immunohistochemical methods.

Stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), a known chemoattractant, and its receptor CXCR4 are widely expressed in the developing and adult cerebral cortex. Recent studies have highlighted potential roles for SDF-1 during early cortical development. In view of the current findings, our histological analysis has revealed a distinct pattern of SDF-1 expression in the developing cerebral cortex at a time when cell proliferation and migration are at peak.
