Antimicrobial resistance is among the greatest threats to public health globally, and drug repurposing strategies may be advantageous to addressing this problem. Mefloquine, a drug traditionally used to treat malaria, has emerged as a promising antibiotic adjuvant, due to its ability to enhance the effectiveness of conventional antibiotics against resistant bacterial strains. In this paper, we first outline the enhancement properties of mefloquine and its mechanisms of action as an adjuvant antibiotic against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

The development of antibiotic resistance complicates the treatment of infectious diseases and is a global public health threat. However, drug repurposing can address this resistance issue and reduce research and development costs. Niclosamide is a salicylanilide compound approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it has been used clinically for treating parasitic infections for many years.

Article Synopsis
  • This study combines CRISPR/Cas12a technology with Multiply-primed-RCA (MRCA) for improved point-of-care testing (POCT) for tuberculosis, addressing limitations in current diagnostic methods.
  • Researchers optimized the method using different DNA ligases and primers, ultimately creating two effective testing methods (T4-MRCA-Cas12a and Taq-MRCA-Cas12a) that can be performed in a single tube.
  • The testing methods showed high accuracy and specificity, effectively detecting tuberculosis with no interference from other bacterial DNA, allowing for results to be observed visually.

Purpose: Accurate detection and identification of pathogens and their associated resistance mechanisms are essential prerequisites for implementing precision medicine in the management of Carbapenem-resistant (CRE). Among the various resistance mechanisms, the production of KPC carbapenemase is the most prevalent worldwide. Consequently, this study aims to develop a convenient and precise nucleic acid detection platform specifically for the gene.

  • - The study explores the link between normal range triglyceride levels and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), using data from over 36,000 individuals in China between 2010 and 2016.
  • - Researchers found a significant association, indicating that individuals with higher normal triglyceride levels had an increased risk of T2DM, with a hazard ratio of 1.81, meaning the risk was nearly doubled.
  • - The findings highlight the importance of managing triglyceride levels through lifestyle changes to help lower the risk of T2DM, especially noting a stronger correlation in females.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic panels that use multiple biomarkers are better for diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) compared to single biomarkers, with models like ASAP and GALAD being evaluated for effectiveness.
  • In a study involving patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs) from 14 hospitals in China, the ASAP model showed superior performance in detecting HCC compared to the GALAD model and individual biomarkers.
  • The ASAP model was particularly effective in identifying HCC across various types of CLDs and excelled in early-stage HCC detection, despite using one fewer biomarker than the GALAD model.

Backgruound: The common reference intervals (RIs) for thyroid hormones currently used in China are provided by equipment manufacturers. This study aimed to establish thyroid hormone RIs in the population of Lanzhou, a city in the subplateau region of northwest China, and compare them with previous reports and manufacturer-provided values.

Methods: In total, 3,123 individuals (1,680 men, 1,443 women) from Lanzhou, an iodine-adequate area of China, perceived as healthy were selected.

Background: Early diagnosis of sepsis is the key to timely, targeted treatment. Cell population data (CPD) has been widely used in many diseases, but its predictive value for early diagnosis and the clinical outcome of sepsis remains unclear. Therefore, this paper discusses whether peripheral blood leukocyte parameters can be used as predictive indicators for early diagnosis and the clinical outcome of sepsis.

Gastric cancer (GC) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Thus, early diagnosis is important to improve disease prognosis. Endoscopic assessment represents the most reliable imaging method for GC diagnosis; however, it is semi-invasive and costly and heavily depends on the skills of the endoscopist, which limit its clinical applicability.

Background: Early diagnosis and treatment are imperative for improving survival in gastric cancer (GC). This work aimed to assess the ability of human serum amino acid and acylcarnitine profiles in distinguishing GC cases from atrophic gastritis (AG) and control superficial gastritis (SG) patients.

Methods: Sixty-nine GC, seventy-four AG and seventy-two SG control patients treated from May 2018 to May 2019 in Gansu Provincial Hospitalwere included.

() is one of the main pathogens causing mastitis in dairy cows. The current work mainly focuses on the pathway of apoptosis induction in MAC-T cells caused by infection or other factors. However, the physiological characteristics of infected MAC-T cells and the resulting mRNA expression profile remain unknown particularly in the case of diverse drug resistant strains.

In eukaryotes, spliceosomes catalyze the splicing of pre-mRNA to mature mRNA. As the core subunit of U2 spliceosome, splicing factor SF3b4 plays not only a crucial role in the splicing process, but also a role in transcription, translation, and cell signal transduction, and participates in the regulation of cell cycle, cell differentiation, and immune deficiency. In recent years, more and more research studies on SF3b4-related diseases, such as Nager syndrome and cancer, have been conducted.
