Background: Acute gastrointestinal bleeding is an emergency condition that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Embolization is considered the preferred therapy in the treatment of lower gastrointestinal bleeding when it is unrealistic to perform the surgery or vasopressin infusion in this population. Treatment of acute lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (any site below the ligament of Treitz) using this technique has not reached a consensus, because of the belief that the risk of intestinal infarction in this condition is extremely high.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare the effectiveness of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) versus endoscopic treatment (ET) in preventing recurrent variceal bleeding in patients.
  • A total of 126 patients who experienced variceal bleeding were analyzed, with 64 receiving TIPS and 62 receiving ET, while excluding certain high-risk patients and those lost to follow-up.
  • Results showed that the TIPS group had significantly lower rebleeding rates and higher survival rates at 1 and 2 years compared to the ET group, making TIPS a more effective option for preventing rebleeding and improving long-term survival.

Objective: To evaluate efficacy and complications for cirrhotic patients with variceal bleeding receiving TIPS.

Methods: Of 137 patients who underwent TIPS from 2002 to 2009, 80 patients were included in this study. Information about the incidence of portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE) and rebleeding, and factors then which affected them, was collected by telephone call, letters, or follow-up visits in the out-patient department.
